Recommended Code Reader?
Can anyone recommend a code reader for the Evo?
I'd like one that will provide me with the code and the what it translate to. I think that's all I need but if there are code reader out there with other usfull functions let me know.
I'm not looking for a shop quality one, just a cheapy to check codes now and again.
I'd also like to know if you can check for faults even if the car doesn't throw a light.
Please state the price and where you bought it from. Or even better post a link.
Thanks!

If you already have a laptop computer you could buy yourself the tactrix cable and download Scan Tech from Aktivematrix for free and that works just as well as a code reader. Just something to think about.

+1 for ebay I think I paid about 15 bucks for mine and works just as well as the expensive ones. I actually had a guy at Pepboys try and sell me one for 100 bucks that did the exact same thing my 15 dollar scanner did.

I have the Scan Gauge II. It's relativly inexpensive & also doubles as a multi gauge. I have mine inthe cubby under the A/C displaying coolant temp, intake air temp, voltage, & engine load. It's always connected so I can scan codes at anytime. You can also get an extra cable & pull the unit out without unwiring it so you can use it on another car.

Thanks for all the reply guys and gals!
I do have a laptop but it's my work laptop. I can install stuff on it but I don't think my IT guys would be to happy should it need to thake it in for repair/ upgrade and they find a code reader on there. LOL Otheriwse I'd be all over the laptop software and lead.
As I said I don't need a shop quality reader and $4k is way too much. I could have a nice turbo kit for that
I was thinking of spending 30 or 40 bucks for one off ebay. It's nice gadget to have.
