FWIW we just dynoed a car that had a lot of 40R setups on it, and tested out the new borgwarner turbo thats between the 40R and the 42R, and it kicked ***
spooled a tiny bit faster than the 4088R, and made more power at less boost with a broader powerband. BW is coming up!!! ill post the dynoplot on monday

^I believe thats the correct turbo. Geoff do you have any vidoes of the dyno, i would love to hear the sound of that turbo as Borg Warner turbos have that jet engine sound to them. BW FTW!!!

5 years old and counting.....
I am curious though as I have searched and still not found much. Is anyone, has anyone have any idea of spool time on a built 2.0 with built head and a full race 40R.
I didn't really want to go with a 2.4 but dang I love the thought of the 40R.
I know many of you will just say buy a Black or buy a Zero....
I really looking to know if there is anyone out there with this combo.

Honestly in my opinion the 40r is an old style turbo there are others that are smaller that make more power throughout the whole rpm band. Check out forced performance 3586R or 3794R or precision 6266,6466,6766

Wow.
For me, comparing when setups can get 300HP is how to define how quick they are on the street (not strip).
That particular 6466 setup crunches the GTX4088R by approx 300rpm. I'm really surprised. I would have thought that the GTX would have taken it to the PTE.
Interested in seeing more GTX4088R setups.

You can't possibly tell what is laggier by looking at compressor maps. The GT40xxR turbos aren't that flash compared to other things around these days, the GTX4088R is too little too late imho. I'd guess that the likes of an FP Super94 HTA would be pretty close in spool and wipe the floor with one in power, or one of the smaller Precision or FP turbos which can make similar power with way better response. The big turbine might suit pump gas lower boost applications a bit better though !?

Reasons I would suggest to start with:
- Tells you nothing about inertia of the mass you are accelerating (comp wheel mass, turbine wheel mass, MOI for their respective sizes from centre, bearing drag etc)
- Tells you nothing about the exhaust energy you are able to harness
- Tells you nothing about the passages which gases are passed through (including turbine housing design, turbine wheel design, turbine housing a/r etc)
- Tells you nothing about the engine spec/tuning (inc. cam timing etc), exhaust and intake manifold design, fuel etc..
- Tells you nothing about how much time the rotating mass is going to be giving to reach what required boost threshold you are targetting
Just for a start.
Maybe it's easier to say that all a good compressor map tells you is the compressor's ability to provide what flow range at what pressure ratio at what compressor efficiency at what shaft rpm.
IMHO a better question is how do you suggest you could work out how it is going to spool from just a compressor map?

No, your correct. Compressor maps ALONE don't tell us everything. But using some trick maths, yes, you can workout roughly how quick you can get it to spool.
At least Garrett and Borg Warner have charts and information to see/calculate how they will perform, unlike other manufacturers....

I guess so - compressor map is probably one of the least relevant parts of the puzzle you could use to determine spool though, I'd say the most helpful part of it would probably be the fact that some maps show you the rpm required to move the air mass intended. Most people don't have the nous to go there and so far the only people I've seen who have claimed to be able to have either been way off, or IMHO are likely to soon find out they've got it wrong - at least if they are honest with themselves.
How did you draw the conclusion that the GTX4088R would be laggier than the GTX4294R? Fwiw the Supra that change from the GTX4294R to the GTX4088R improved lag by something like 800rpm, apparently
