Clutch care

Lots of people are complaining about shoddy clutches..

Maybe if those of you who aren't having any problems (and still doing some hard launches.. ie 5k+ rpms) could post your technique and those of you that are having problems post yours, we can find out a way to still drive aggressively but not tear up the clutch

Just an idea....

hmmmm simple. I don't launch my EVO. If I EVER felt the need to launch the car I would never dump the clutch. Feather it.

Live by those guidelines and you won't be one of many that complain about the clutch.

If you need to launch the car...feather the clutch. Never dump it.

20+ launches at the drag strip, always easing it out (quickly though) never smoked it. 1.9 60' times. Not the greatest, but I don't want to replace the clutch anytime soon either.

1.9 60's ? I do those in my truck's every day driving....

I guess the only way to get a good 60' time is to dump the clutch,, maybe thats why people are having so many problems,

I have yet to drive an evo so im kinda cluless on launches but my Audi was never very happy when i dumped over 4k rpms

but then im no pro either,, could use some tips / schooling im sure

With the clutch restrictor in you could probably side step the clutch. Take it out and feather it out and I think you'd be better off.

992gnt do you have the restrictor in still?
I also think that if it was broken in properly, it is less likely to burn up.

I dont have any problems. Never dump or slip the clutch really........ I have 5000 miles and it acts like new. Also I dont have any grinding in 5th. My 2nd gear might feel notchy sometimes if I dont finesse it, but other than everything is coo.

Well I didn't buy the car to drag race it, and if I had an AWD dyno within 100 miles, I probably wouldn't go to the track at all. 1.9 60' times are fine with me. Congrats on doing that daily in your truck.

Timzcat - Yes, the restrictor is still in. I am going to have the dealer service the tranny, transfer case, and rear diff at 5k just to make sure everything is OK. After that I'll pull the restrictor out - I don't want to give the dealer any reason to deny warranty work if they find something.

not to sound like a dumbass but what are you talking about when you say "restrictor." Are you talking about something in the clutch master cylinder that limits how fast you can let the clutch out?

Who cares what he does on his truck. It's not like he owns an EVO anyway.

Damn, your question is also your answer. The clutch poll has pics of it near the last page and there is other posts that talk about it.

IMO the feel is 100% better with it out. The dealer would most likely never be able to tell, but I get your point 992gnt.

Most of the time I feather the clutch out quickly, but I have dumped it over 6000 rpms quite a few times. I seem to get the best starts by letting the clutch out a little bit while revving the motor to get boost then quickly letting it out while giving it more gas. I guess I will find out how good it works when I go to the strip next weekend and get some times. I have almost 6000 miles and no slipping yet.(knock on wood)
