I just thought I'd point out that even with a compressor housing change, you won't make a IX turbo out of an VIII turbo. The center section that houses the bearings is different as well.

Since the IX and VIII are both 16G's they ought to use the same bearing housing. The compressor housing's backplate would probably differ though. Trinydex stated in an earlier thread that the IX's compressor wheel is a tad wider than the VIII comp wheel.

The bearing housings of the VIII and the IX are not the same.

Read, for example, the Forced Performance description of the Evo Green, made from the Evo IX turbo:

"This turbo appears externally to be a 2006 EVO9 turbocharger. It uses the larger diameter EVO9 compressor housing and bearing housing found in the 2006 models.

That is, I expect, why you can't send in an VIII and have FP turn it into a Green.

It's not the number of blades on the wheel that is germane to the original question. The wheels can be, and are, changed on a Green. The point is that the physical configuration of the turbo is different.

^+1, i thought the same thing...

I have a coup0le questions to add to this as I am trying to learn all this stuff as well.
1. what do these differences between the two do (well 3 actually)? I understand the whole 10.5 hotside gig, but like it was stated before, on the 06 it is completely different than the 03/04 and the 05.

2. I have been looking for a 10.5 hotside so I can send it out when I send my manifold off to get done. I see alot of "double-flapper", so obviously I assume there is a single-flapper, so whats the differences between these and what are the perks to one or the other...

Thanks Gents!!!

Thanks for clearing this up, CO_VR4. I was operating under the false assumption that the VIII and IX turbos, both used the same center housing.

The 03-06 Evos ALL come with a 16g turbo.

The 06 has a bigger compressor housing and a wider compressor wheel.

The only real difference between the singe and double flapper hotside, are they either have one wastegate flapper, or two. You wont really notice a difference in either.
