Damage to the Honeycomb on the MAF?
Does anyone know the impact of having a little bit of damage on the honeycomb in the Mass Air Flow meter? I was unscrewing a bolt, and my hand slipped, and now there is a little dent in the MAF. Im not sure how bad that is.
Please help

i did the same thing. only mine is pretty bad. i fixed the ones that were real bad and the car runs fine. i called and a new air flow meter is $332 dealer cost because i work at a speed shop. that sucks that you have to spend $332 on a $10 or $20 honey comb. if the car runs fine i woulden't worry about it. obdII is very sensitive

If it's anything like the MAFs in the Corvette, the honeycomb screen is supposedly there to smooth out the airflow, but the car will run just fine without it. I ran my Vette for 2 years without a screen in my MAF with zero problems. Many people think removing it will improve intake airflow...YMMV...

Yea I ficuked mine up pretty bad when I was installing my RMR Air finter kit. This one bolt would not budge for **** and the wrench slipped and really screwed up the screen pretty bad. I went into spasms because I knew how much it would cost to replace the MAF. All I did was got my biology disection kit I had from my freshman year of college and went to work. A good pair of tweezers and a needle and a lot of time fixed some of the problem. I was really concerned the CEL would trigger now that normal airflow would be disrupted, but there was no such problem and there was no power loss on my part as far as I know.

Hobie.....now that i thought of it...if they are different (i'm guessing only by size.....wiring should be similiar) this would benefit Lancer owners because they would be able to use the larger MAS from the EVO and free up some restriction.
alex...if you get a chance can you measure the opening on your MAS from your EVO. and if your not feeling lazy can you look at the wires for the MAS plug and post the colors...maybe they are the same for Lancer and EVO.

You think you could hook a fellow member out? I'd prefer not to pay $350 for a new MAF when all I need is a $.20 piece of material

Took out my honecomb and have had no problems. Also I have extra honecomb material in raw sheets if anybody needs it. I only have one sheet for about one MAF

if you take the honecomb out you are definatly going to have problems. even if you don't feel it your having fuel problems without the honeycomb. the air needs to be blown straight through the MAS. when air is sucked into the intake it spirals thats why u need the honeycomb to make it straight..
