Rebuild stock turbo?

I've recently noticed that my turbo has a little bit of radial play in the shaft (2-4mm) and a very tiny bit of axial play. It seems to be more than I remember it having last time I looked. Anyways, can I just replace the bearings to fix this. I'll probably get a bigger one in a year or so, but I don't want the stock one to crap out before then. Thanks.

they are easy to rebuild but with the cost of the rebuild kit and rebalance, you could prolly find one for sale on here.

I know I've seen a spec for shaft play, but I can't remember where or what it was.

If axial play is negligible then I wouldnīt worry about 2mm of play perpendicular to the shaft axis. Start worrying if when you accelerate at WOT and suddenly let off the gas you immediately see a cloud of smoke appear in the rearview.

Up and down shaft play is completley normal, side to side is not.

check the inside of the compressor housing, were the compressor wheel spins around, and see if it shows sign of metal to metal rubbing.

check out this rebuild kit from ebay

you need the TD05HR

I don't think I have any smoke. At least none of my friends have said anything. My window tint is pretty dark, so I doubt I'd see anything, but I haven't looked either.

Thanks guys, I will check into everything you guys said. I don't really want to buy a turbo right now (or the very near future).

The website says this kit is not for tdo5hr reverse scroll turbo in evo 4-9? If you notice signs of metal scraping is it still worth rebuilding? I found a few that have a kit for evo4-9 but it's all from across the pond. One is Kamak I found it on ebay as well.
