Big cams little Turbo
So there has been some confusion about power loss with a bigger cams and stock turbo or Green. It has been said that the S2 will lose power or wont gain any with the stocker because it cant keep up. Lucas is running S2's, I run S2s and there are a few others on "smaller" turbos that havent noticed any loss.
At our recent dyno day, Lucas put down 501whp and backed it up with a 506. Obviously there are alot of little details that contribute to this fantastic amount of power on a stock IX turbo. It wasnt the only one that dyno'd that day that was on bigger cams and a smaller turbo.
Chris just had Cosworth M3s installed with springs and retainers and then a retune by us on the dyno. Here is the results:
You will notice that the car makes 350whp from 5700-7750 with a peak of 374@7000. The rest of his mod list is pretty basic bolt ons and the last time the car dyno'd on the same dyno in very similar conditions it put out 324. This was with the same amount of boost, the same dyno operators, air temps within 10*, humidity spot on, and the same tuning crew.
Simply put, stock turbo cars WILL NOT LOSE with big cams. I invite any with similar DYNO proven examples of this to post, as well any proof that these cars were a fluke.
As an interesting sidenote, Lucas and I have noticed that with a "standard" MIVEC map the car feels like it is switching to VTEC above 5k as the car really starts to come up on the lobe. The VIIIs dont really seem to have that same exact feel to me. Perhaps Master English can give his impressions on the VIII.

I too share your sentiment. Seems as though quite a few of our UK brethren have been doing this for some time as well with success.
My "big cams" are sitting in a box a few feet away from me at the moment, but I'll gladly contribute in the coming weeks when I get them installed and tuned. If I can get a "Greenish" turbo on as well I think my goal with this car will be attained.

Just BC springs and retainers and S2s. I havent had the head off the car yet. Lucas is running a head with minor bowl work but no real porting. Chris' is like mine, with springs/retainers and no port work. I installed springs and retainers last season because with the 6 speed I was going out the back door at 8200-8300rpm in 4th. Hopefully this year with the 5 speed it wont be quite so crazy...but I wont mind if it is.
