5 speed trans X 6 speed trans

I did always desire a 6 speed trans in my EVO 8...
But after some searchs I heard that the 5 speed trans is stronger....
Since High WHP is aldo desired will 5 speed be better on high HP EVO?
Is it true 5 speed is stronger that 6 speed trans?
Thanks for all inputs.

It's debateable; the 6 speed supposedly has a stronger 2nd gear? I think. However, the real issue with the 6 speed tranny is the cooling issue. I'm pretty sure that they just added a 6th gear in the same size transmission, which means it has less fluid to keep it cool, thus the issues. If I'm wrong, anyone feel free to correct me. I'm still learning

You desire a 6-speed in your EVO that is an upgrade from the 5-speed, but that isnt the case. The 6-speed for the EVO sucks, its weak and you dont benefit on the highway from the 6th gear. Its a complete waste IMO.

Mitsu should have made ONE transmission that was a 6 speed with 5 speed gearing 1-4, a closer ratio 5th, and a tall 6th for highway cruising and good mpg. Too bad they didnt.

You can't go too tall on these tiny engines. That is an issue as well. FWIW the top gears on both trannys are pretty good all things considered.

On another note, the the 6 speed vs 5 speed threads are getting annoying. How many times can the same questions and answers be posted? How about a sticky? Hell, I'd gather all the info on the subject myself if it meant fewer threads like these.

Ive seen about 7 MR trannies go out in the past year ranging from 5000 miles to 30000 miles. I have seen 0 five speeds go out so far. Hope that answers your question.

Well that depresses the crap out of me. I hope I have better luck with my MR. I did notice the other day it stayed way hotter than any other part on my car. Effin' mitsu transmissions!

Ok, there are about 1000 threads on here that discuss this topic better than any of the posters to your question. There are numerous theories and some decent test data, but from what I have read the following can be said (and I am vastly paraphrasing):

The six-speed has a stronger (aka WIDER) 1st through 3rd gear. The five-speed's 4th and 5ths gears are stronger. I believe one of Carrol Smith's or maybe Corky's... books has a great breakdown of transmissions that will allow you to better understand the cooling requirements. A heat transfer class wouldn't hurt either. If you properly take care of your tranny it will take care of you. The only issues I have read/heard of are people who do not drive well, don't do proper maintenance or road-race the crap out of their MR and have a 4th gear failure (again with the non-proper prep...I mean hell, they are RACING the car).

Use the search and save everyone the headache.

End of rant.

EDIT: Exciting News is right about the Aisin transmission. I was also mistaken about the 3rd gear of the 6 spd. It is 16mm, more narrow than the 5spd.
