Just how bad are the MR 6-Speed Transmissions?

Warrtalon, I'm not going to frankenstein my MR for the small amount of non-competitive racing that I do. Repair shops could recommend it to the moon. It doesnt fit in my goals right now and personally I prefer the 6 speed transmission for my daily commute.
99% of the time my Evo is a near stock appearing DD and I absolutely love it! . 1% of the time it's a race car chasing some number printed on a piece of paper. If it were the other way around I would probably change my decision.

But eventually, they all seem to go. I had many track events before mine went, but then it went easily while pulling in 4th. It wasn't during a shift, I didn't have much over 300whp/wtq, and it was a cool evening event on just my 2nd lap of a session, so it wasn't even heated up much. There are many more of us who have had 4th go out, and the guys who race in T2 will swear by it.

I love my IX MR 6sp. After reading a ton of posts on here to the like, I am not convinced the 6sp is a bad tranny. I think some people wreck theirs prematurely because they start trying out different fluids/cocktails, rather than sticking to the stock -- what its designed to run. Ever noticed how the owner's manual says "or EXACT equivalent" next the fluid, versus it says, "or equivalent" next to every other kind of fluid on the specifications page.
Granted mine only has 24K on it. Around 22K, it started giving me a little grind (no sound, just kinda notchiness on shifts) at times going from 1->2. Once heated up it would go away. Changed my fluid (used the Super DiaQueen) and its back to perfect again (no metal shavings on the plug -- happy to see that). I plan on making the tranny fluid a 10-15K service item, and/or every year when I bring it out of the garage for spring. I hope that if I keep the fluid fresh, it will give me many years of good use. I'm only auto-xing the car, so it doesn't get quite as much of the 4th gear abuse as the road race cars.

FWIW I love my IX Six Speed. It is my daily driver and I rarely drag it. Why wouldn't an external oil cooler help the 6 Speed?

From TRE (GEARS). It's not 300whp...just 300hp (flywheel). An oil cooler can help some, but it's not the answer. It's a band-aid to what is a poor design. Dragging is not an issue - you can drag it all you want unless you start making a lot of power. I had 250+ drag passes on mine without it even getting notchy or grinding. It let go in 4th while road racing while just pulling down the straight.

I don't think I've ever seen a quadruple post
Anyways, I'm thinking the tranny would last with some good power if you didn't nail the 4th and 5th gear shifts. NLTS is definitely out of the question with that power unless you could care less about rebuilding after some time. Who knows, it might last but I would take it easy and it should last some, even at that power level. Like others have said, it's not made of glass but take care of it.

Your power level will likely overwhelm 4th gear, and your gearing will be a major restriction, since 4th is so short. You'd be at the top of 5th with 600whp in a 6spd if you dragged it.
