I started down this path because of the Maryland emissions test. They hook up a cable to the OBDII port and run a "test" of some sort. I suspect they are just looking for DTCs. Anyhow, the Evo 6 ECU does not talk via the OBDII protocol, not even to a handheld code scanner. I couldn't find an Evo 7 ECU quickly here in the US, so I went with the USDM 8 Ecu.

The emissions test was my primary concern, but as someone else here pointed out, now i can tune via EcuFlash as well.

Actually not. You end up with this pinout to control both the condenser fans and A/C because the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) pin that would normally control them doesn't work with the type fan in the Evo 6. I had this confirmed by several folks over at openecu.org who have done this and similar swaps multiple times (though not with the USDM 8 Ecu.)

Pin 31 isn't a fan output. That's all. 32 and 34 are the US Evo 8 fan outputs. You used RREs Evo pinouts which aren't correct with regards to the condneser fan output.

I've done this conversion many times over, for Evo 1, 4, 5 & 6, the first time over 1 year ago. In fact I was the one who told Cossie 1 (who helped you) how to setup the fan control.

Cool, thanks for the info. How do I need to correct it then?

So are you saying to leave 32, and 34 alone as they are the same on both cars?
How do you wire the HI and low Fans from One evo 8 PWM output?

You don't use the PWM output, the fans won't work with them.

Good morning I tried this but now I'm getting crank and cam sensor DTCs. Are they related or a different problem? thanks very much!

Good to know that there might be a V7 for the Evo 7!

I'm stationed in Japan and will try to import it back as a racecar. Here are some pics.

Special thanks to Cossie, BarryC, and Todd-W over at OpenECU.org for helping me through the swap. Here are the details.

First, compare the USDM Evo 8 pinout to the Evo 6 TME:

Based on the pinout comparison, the follow harness changes are necessary:

Swap pins 8 and 22
Connect 31 from the ECU to 34 on the vehicle harness
Connect 31 from the ECU to 20 on the vehicle harness
Connect 32 from the ECU to 21 on the vehicle harness
Disconnect pin 87

I used a patch harness to make the changes and not have to cut the actual vehicle harness. All connections were soldered and then protected with heat shrink tubing. Any flying leads remaining were folded over and shrink tubed as well. Here are pictures of the work:

Once the harness was finished, I needed the proper ROM for the ECU. BarryC provided a JDM Evo 8 GSR ROM file and xml definitions with the rear O2, EGR, and immobilizer disabled.

My TME fired up right away, and has thrown no codes. I took it immediately over to our emissions station, where it passed their ODBII check. (The emissions test started me down this path in the first place. The Evo 6 TME ECU would not talk to the emission station computer via the OBDII port.)

Very happy to have the swap complete, and can't wait to start logging and tuning.

Thanks again,
Tim

Man almost hurt my car for your bad ECU swap, this is not correct, the fan lo not starts at 88 ēC only the hi fan at 105 ēC with others ROM's like 97250001, the lo and hi fan starts at the same celsius grades(88ēc) but with the tephra roms your swap have problems, I leave the correct swap of Evo 8 ecu in a Evo VI.

You need put together the 32 and 21 wire and conect it to pin 34 in the EVO 8 ECU.
also put together the 34 and 20 wire and conect these to pin 32 in the EVO 8 ECU.

This is the correct Ecu Swap manual:
