Those who paid up for a real turbo, opinions?

Well, like the title says, lookin for opinions from people who decided to crack that $3500 barrier and go for a real turbo.

Ive had my evo about 3 years now, and ive enjoyed the hell out of it, but I'm tired of being on the stock turbo and its limiting abilities. It seems like a futile effort to hope that someone will make a bolton that offers good bang for the buck, due to the limitations of the stock frame turbo.

Sure, I havent gotten all the good out of mine, a best of 11.9 @ 115 with 93, a self tune and the usual boltons. But all the other stuff is marginal gains, that are a nickle and dime you to death for another .5 mph or so.

I'm tired of the stock turbo feeling great from about 4k-5500, than that tapering feeling after 6k, even with the forge wga and it holding 22 to red, its just not the same as that initial surge.

So.. those of you who paid up.. did you really think it was worth it? Did you have buyers remorse afterwords? Any regrets, if you could do it again, would you?

Leaning towards a 3076 myself, I dont mind reasonable lag, however having driven an evo with a 35r on a stock 2.0, thats just the extra bit to much. It really had nothing in 1st gear till around 6k. I didnt say it didnt spool by 6k.. just saying it didnt have that oomph till about 6k.

Have you considered the new FP Red, bolt-on turbo and a set of larger injectors?

Havent seen proven results of reasonable gain out of a fp red on a non all out setup, however, I have seen proven results of people going for a real kit on limited hardware. I've seen 3076's hitting 118-122 on pump with the same hardware I have + injectors. Obviously injectors will be a given, just wondering about some people who were in the same boat, and if they felt they made the right choice jumping to a real one instead of doing all the little **** trying to max out the stocker.

I got a 35R myself in the stock block and love it. In mine you don't have to wait until 6K in 1st to feel the power. It's there at 4 something. Maybe because of the cams?

I say go for the 35R at once. It's very possible for you to pull the trigger for the 3076 and then buy the 35R a few months later. You'll get used to the lag, it's not that bad

I would say HTA35.

O'wise go with the fp red. This turbo offers much less lag than the gt30. Not enough data abt this turbo on a regular bolt on car, but i would guess it won't sacrifice much power compared to the gt30, if any. Nothing that would make up for the better spool anyway.

Good luck

I love my set up. Lag is not bad at all. I have ALOT of stock parts on my car. Intake mani, T/B, valve springs and retainer, long block except ARPs, ECU and MAF.
My cams are very mild with the FP2s.

With a Flash I made 439 whp and 355 tq on a Dynojet. It was 93 degrees in the dyno room. Stupid hot and hazy. I plan on changing cams and going to new plenum and be near 500 on stock block and MAF with straight 93 no meth/alky while still on a flash.

Go for it!

Go for the 35 !

You can peice together your own "specs" of a turbo for wayyyyyy cheaper then that. You just have to go the right place. You can get almost an ENITRE turbo kit (well, piece it together) and have it be the same price.

why not go with the ATP GT3076 drop in kit? its about $2800 and i think most people don't regret it. In the quest for power there is always a trade off, as long as you don't get too large of a turbo i doubt you will be unhappy, just establish a HP goal and get the turbo that best fits within your goal, DONT get a 35r if you only want 450whp.
