I wasn't around during those days. I actually figured this one out on my own. I must have been sleeping during that decade, or two. The MAF lip was just too high to let it go without smoothing the airflow.

On my Subaru which went 11.1 on the stock ecu and motor (hard to do with a STI) I used a custom Big MAF from Cobb tuning which had a honeycomb in it, it was a large 80 mm tube and the honeycomb was epoxyed in and rivited very securely. It was amazing to see how well that unit performed when compared to other non honeycomb big maf units I have tested in the Subaru scene.

I accidentally damaged mine when I first put in my intake so I ended up taking it out. The only thing I noticed was if I suddenly engaged the clutch while normal driving the idle would occasionally drop almost to 0 then come back up to normal. It didn't do it every time, just once in a while. After a few more mods I got tuned and it seemed to go away. I'll probably end up replacing it though.

I know this whole discussion is about using the stock MAS but wouldn't it be more beneficial, airflow wise, to convert over to the GM 3inch MAF?
