In the popular sense yes it is ricey but then again lets take a look at what is ricey but not talked about a lot because many of us do it:
18"+ wheels- unless you have a BBK and need the space this is rice plain and simple; no functional value. I would venture to say that it is detrimental because it ****s up your gearing and now you have to be revved even more when exiting a turn not to mention when buying tires there is a huge difference between 17 and 18 in terms of cost. They do look good though.
Front lip and/or rear wing- Again they look nice but how often do you venture above 90 mph? Track junkies different story but what % of people go to the track that often where it is worth cringing every time you exit a driveway because of fear that that $250 lip is going to crack?
Shifter knobs- Oh this is something you really should upgrade cause otherwise you will not get it into gear. Sorry for the sarcasm but is there a functional reason to pay 50 60 80 even $100+ for something that is not the least bit more functional than the stock knob?

Think of how many more things are just for looks or sound and if you have any of them don't throw stones.

IMO, if you "upgrade" your CBV to a BOV and your not maxing out the stocker, then YES, it is ricey.

I dont care about what anybody says, im still gettin me a Greddy Type S BOV no matter what. lol

i bought the greddy type-s for my evo and i brought it to my performance shop and they told me it would be stupid to run it... it will stall and leakk but i still have it and it sits in my trunk... i was told the best bet is the evo 9 mr stock valve there the same as ours stock but metal hold way more boost.. but still till these day idk if it will be a HP loss if i run the BOV

I must have had the only good greddy type s, I was running 30 lbs of boost all day everday and had 0 issues with it.

Form and function.....

if your doing it just to hear the noise, but a cold air intake and listen to the stocker!

this poll has too few options.
there should be one for "Yes, unless it is built enough to NEED/WARRANT one"
that's what I would choose.

I personally don't care what some uptight sheeple think should go on my car or not. If I want something on my car, it's going on my car. That being said, I also, always try to learn as much as possible about something before I install it so I know what I am getting into. I put an intake on my car and left the stock MR bov on. No need for me to replace at the moment, and for those who like to annoy people with the whoosh, you can hear the stocker very well with an intake, even recirc'd.

A lot of EVO guys here are running high HP, 400+, that can justify getting a VTA BOV because it serves more of a function than fashion. I've got a metal IX one, recirculated of course, that serves me well. As for being rice, it would depend on the application. If you have 400+ HP and need to hold high boost, then it's not rice. Anything less than that I would call you a ricer because it's mostly fashion and sound your looking for, especially if your at stock boost. I'm assuming your getting one because you have high HP and need to hold boost.

What's YOUR reason of getting one? (choose one)
A. I need it to hold high boost. I'm not a ricer.
B. I need people to know I'm turbo charged when I pass them on low boost. I'm a ricer.

I think we all know that. I mentioned the IX metal one and not a JDM IX Metal one, as i have an VIII with the POS plastic. Though a lot of people say they have a "JDM" IX BOV cause it does sound cooler to some.

i took my plastic one off... and melted it. then put on a aps. only to make noise... I am the biggest ricer. I put on a spoiler on top of my original one also, to increase rear downforce. it ripped off and hit a car behind me.

What about the GFB's BOV? I like mine a lot. Holds boost great, much better than my stock 8 plastic one plus it can be set to VTA, recirculate or a combo of both. That way you can make noise when you want to or shut it off if you get sick of it or are having stalling issues. So far no stalling issues on mine but i have not set it to totally VTA. I'm in the middle so it vents some and circualtes some.. good combo.

Yep, my stock EVO 8 will start leaking about 24 psi. The EVO 9 has a metal valve instead of my crappy 8 plastic one. If your pushing 30+ then i say yes, you need a better DV. Note i did NOT say BOV because not many of us have a blow-thru maf system.
