bought 10w-40 by accident. question.

I need an oil change, I'm actually slightly over. When i went to grab the 5qt jug at wal-mart..... i grabbed the wrong viscosity.

It's not like im tracking the car right now or anything. So is it ok if I put the 10w-40 in? has anyone done it? I understand it robs a little horsepower and what not, I was just wondering if maybe that would be too thick for a turbo car.

Thanks. Jeff

how is the weather in your area? If it going to be real cold soon i would stick with the 5w. You would be fine either way though

the weather is pretty warm right now although the fall is creeping in around the corner. I'm sure by then i'll be changing my oil anyways but I just wanted to make sure the viscosity isn't going to make my turbo work overtime or something along those lines lol

Yeah, exactly! What brand of 10W-40 do you intend to use?

Agree i see no issue with the oil...

But if it gets really cold where your at i would suggest warming the car up a bit longer.

What I would do if you are worried is this:

1. buy the correct oil
2. Get an oil flush solvent (usually costs about $10 for 1 bottle)
3. follow directions of flush and complete oil change

good luck

alright cool thanks guys. The oil is castrol syntec which is fully synthetic obviously by its name haha. When winter comes, I'll be sure to have 5w instead of 10w as well as 30 for viscosity. I used 10w-30 last winter and I did notice the car not liking it all that much.

thanks! Jeff.

Castrol isn't so bad. I've used it before when it was on sale.
