viii block ix head

Update with track times on page 4

Well, I am going to use an evo 8 block with an evo 9 head. Its a long story as why I am doing this, but I know people have done it. There isn't a lot of info about this subject so I wanted to start a thread to throw ideas around and give some guys more options that blow up their 9 motors.

I think that most of the issue is with the oil supply from the head to the block. I have to wait til I get my 8 block and really compare the differences. I think this swap is somewhat along the lines of doing an ls/vtec in the honda world when mating the two engines together.

Any knowledge or ideas are greatly appreciated.

MIVEC oil feed is the only difference in the block. I believe the factory 8 oil pressure port will need to be modified to accept the banjo bolt for the MIVEC oil feed.

I think the pressure only affects the mivec.

This makes me feel even better about the conversion. I will give an update when I find out what needs to be done to mod the oil feed hole or just fab up a new oil line. If anyone else knows exactly what to do feel free to add to the thread.

Evo 8 blocks are plentiful and evo 9 blocks aren't. I want to provide all info in this thread to make this an easy alternative for guys like me who don't have limitless money.

Thanks guys.

Just thought I would update this thread. I got the oil feed hole modified on my VIII block so that I can use it with an Evo IX head. I used a 27/64 drill to drill out the oil feed hole on the VIII block and then tapped it with an M12 X 1.25 tap. This is very simple and gives lots more options for people with Evo IX's that blew the motor up and can't find a used block.

Boost on!

ill be taping my block this week, will post pics, I got the 27/64ths Bit which is going to be very tight with the tap, and just so you know yes it is a M12x1.25 tap, I got mine for 8.00 at Napa, They also call it a spark plug tap sometimes. Will keep you posted. My only question is when drilling and such how do i keep the metal shaving out of my nice clean and built block. I am thinking of of course drilling slow and letting it clean out allot and drilling it upside down so the shavings fall down.

Here is My Evo8 to Evo 9 block pics and such

First Evo 8 block 2.3L stroker.

27/64th Drill bit

M12x1.25 Tap (also known as spark plug tap)

Some tape to make off depths on items

Drill

First I took the old 9 block and measured how deep I needed to drill and check how far it needs to be tapped.

Put a mark on the drill bit and tap and then drilled and tapped it.

I did it with the block on its side in the air so all the metal would just fall out of it and none would go into the block passages. Then after it was drilled and cleaned with pipe cleaners and such I taped it in the same position and then cleaned again. The bolt fits fine a little loser than the old block but with some lock tight and what not, it will be perfect. If you have any questions and what not let me know this is a 2.3L block and also its going to have a 35R on it and I have 272 280 HKS cams. Will let you know how things turn out as I get all the parts and get it all back together very soon like in the next week or so.

I am curious how you are going to machine so there is a good seal on the crush washer? That looks a little bit lumpy in the 2 pics I can see good detail of anyway.
