What makes a reliable high power Evo?

(punchline)

An owner that reliably fixes it.

Just a funny remark my buddy made over the weekend. I thought it was pretty hilarious.

Haha sounds more like a DSM than an Evo.
non-punchline:
_Maintenance
_Safe tune
_Scrupulous Driving
_Less use
_MONEY!

For myself, I had my Evo standard'ish for 5 years, perfect reliability. Made a lot of trips to the track. Went through I think 2 clutches in 5 years. Exedy single plates. Ran 12.1-12.5 consistently. Had a lot of fun. Then finally caved in and decided to go nutz.

1. Bought a used built motor which turned out to drink about 2 quarts of oil in a day. Grr. Oil change on Friday, spun bearings on Sunday from low oil. I bought a real dog of a motor here. My fault for not being more careful.

2. Went to a 2.4l motor. Had to pull head because of leaking valve guides in number one exhaust. Otherwise motor has been good.

3. Since the 2.4l I broke 3 stock front diffs. Switched to Kaaz and seems to be working well now.

4. Cracked a bell housing from a hard launch. Didn't slip clutch enough. My fault.

5. Anti-Surge cover off my 35R pops off. Sent to FP for repair. Fixed for free.

6. Bearing damage on 35R, replace CHRA. Thanks FP for good price.

7. Just yesterday replaced the original rear diff on my car.

That is all basically in the last 1.5 years!

What I've learned is 2.4 + 35R + VP Import does not like stock Evo 6 front diffs.

And also learned that it can be very expensive trying to pump all that power through an Evo. I'm sure some are reliable, and others aren't. But I wonder what the ratio is...

I'm trying to have mine reliable as possible...
went with new everything...new water pump, oil pump, new motor, new head..all new hoses and fittings, all new gaskets and seals, plus the mods in my sig...

dont think I left out anything..well i hope not!

Learnt enough from my last 7.5 years of owning a E7

try to stay stock as possible, try not to upgrade too much just in the areas that make the power , like turbo and fuel system that all I would do to get to 500 and better

I've been really impressed with all the track action of the Buschur customer cars this year. I don't know how much we all don't know about issues they might have. But they have obviously been killing it at the track so regardless it is impressive.

I dunno.. I'd probably not be so negative about the reliability if I hadn't had the front diff issues. The Evo 6 transfer case and front diff is smaller than E7-9 and I think can take a lot less torque than the newer Evos.
