Exhaust Manifold Cleanup and Heat Shield

Hey all,

I want to polish up my exhaust manifold and its more of a pain than i thought. I have some mothers polish but i need a recommendation for getting the rust off. Also, has anyone taken that grey paint off of their Heatshield and repainted it? Thanks.

Try sand blasting it. Its cast Iron so it will only rust once more. I polished my stock heat shield but im sure you can paint it with high temp paint.

Ok, so if i take off the lame grey paint on the heat shield i will be ok? It sounds like the exhaust manifold isnt worth the trouble...

The shield can be cleaned up with just some steel wool. It looks nice without paint; just slightly polished. Takes only 30 minutes to do. Does a good job on the other aluminum parts (intercooler and pipes) as well. Just make sure you get the medium-fine grade wool, nothing too coarse or you'll scratch it up.

I may be doing mine in a high temp silver this week. Still debating it, i did it on my dsm and liked it but just not 100% if it will look good on the evo. If i do it i will post pics.

I sanded and repainted my heat shield and it was awesome...for a while. After about 3 months and 2 track sessions during the summer, it started turning yellowish aroung the manifold bolts. Then the paint turned white. Then it started chipping off. I had to repaint it and it only goes on the car for shows.
If your car never really sees high temps (i.e. track time), you will probably be OK. Plenty of people have done it before.

You can use a thermal paint, like TurboX, and it will last up to 2200 degrees.

As long as you use high temp paint it will be fine. I've never had to repaint the heatsheild on my dsm after 6 years. It's been raining around here last few days so i still haven't decided if I'm going to paint mine.
