If you're bent on getting a non-BB Garrett, look at a GT4088. Under $1k, way more efficient than a T67. Also consider Borg Warners, very efficient, reasonable prices, and proven to make tons of power for a given size while spooling well.

i have owned a 4088r ballbearing turbo from garrett and i can say it is in fact a slow spooler.i had it on an sti whitch is a 2.5. put it on a 2.0 and youve got nothing till 5500 rpm.i just bought a 6765b (the pte turbos use this designation for ballbearing turbos just look on the turbo itself)it should hit full boost on a 2.0 befor 5k rpm, probably closer to 4300.there are alot of good turbos and some great turbos out there, you have to ultimately decide a few things . first what are you going to do with this car ? (drag race ,short road course, street only, bonneville salt flats??) all of these require a specific combo for best results. how much power can you afford to make (we all know that making hp costs so its good to have a realistic goal) third (and there are many more things to consider but thiese few questions answered honestly will point you to the right turbo)and this really is an extension of the first and second where do you want your powerband . a smaller tubo is best for a tight road course.obviously a huge turbo with expensive bottom end and valvetrain is what you need for a drag car.we all know small turbos spool fast so you get hp early but it runs out of wind so no huge hp.most people that are looking for compromise with good street manners go for a 35r.you can get a good 35r ballbearing unit from someone on this forum for under a grand.do a little research.stepping up to a 37r and larger requires alot more supporting mods (bigger injectors upgraded fuel sytem and engine internals.you may not want to drop that kind of cash, i dont know your budget but it gets expensive really fast.good luck with your choice.
