Bumping this up. I'm going to take a vid later of my car which sounds horrendous and they try the rag fix. If that solves it you've just made me the happiest man in the world heading into 2010.
I've always thought those shields were flimsy and liable to rattle against things but never thought it was the noise I've been dealing with. I'll report back asap.

revvin9k, Thank you so so much for tracking this down! This has been, actually, an off and on issue for me for about a year now. Sometimes the sound would go away and then it would come back. I Am going to attempt this potential solution and hope that it works, because, like you, could not accept this as "normal." I will definitely post my results. I was told by tuners and mechanics in my area that a TC rebuild is necessary to solve my issue. I was frustrated with the expense id have to shell out, but at the same time, in this game, you gotta pay to play. I hope this is my "saving grace"!!

wow.... that pertty loud..... Really i would say its a t case bearing that is worn.... I had a tranny make a similar sound and it never broke , it just was really loud. beacuse it only made noise when under decel. I would say it was bearing vibration, prob caused by improper back shimming......

yes it is possible for the TOB to make noise, but it would be apparent when you put your foot on the clutch, as soon as you applied pressure to the cluch you would hear a wirring noise..... I doubt its the TOB. Is the tranny quiet at idle when not in gear ?
When you installed the tranny did you put too much pressure in the out put shaft ?

It only rattles at 4th and 5th gear at highway RPMs when i let go off the gas in gear.
What else could it be??
I'm thinking the lighter mass of the flywheel is causing some vibrations that it did not with the stock one?

Its way too loud to be normal vibration unmasked by a lighter flywheel. does it happen at all in third at a higher rpms ? I think you only hear it in 4 or 5th because it takes that kind of tranny rpm to feel/hear the effects. Do you agree ? Its mostlikely a bearing, try looking at your driveshaft yoke bearings. primarily the one right behind the t-case out put shaft. if one of those bearings go bad you might have vibration under a no load condition.

Okay, I took ALL my gas tank shields off, and the noise is still there.
My tcase is built as well as my rear diff. I have yet to send my trans out yet, but that is next on the list.
Mine happens under load(in gear), leading me to believe this is drive train related. Don't know, I'll report back as I dig further into this.
