It started to rattle about a week ago. It only happens after a cold start. If I press the clutch in to the floor and rev the car, i can hear this loud rattle. Then I also hear it even louder when I press the clutch pedal when driving and shifting gears. So it occurs when taking it out of gear into neutral. After a few minutes of driving the rattle dissapears completely. This indicates it is related to the cold. Sounds like a heatshield rattle (metal on metal).
I don't think its the throw out bearing because the symtoms are different. It rattles when I press the clutch in and only when its cold.
Evo IX, has 24k miles and still has the stock clutch, only mod is 3" catback. The rattle is getting worse everyday, I might have to take it to Mitsu.
I will try to record the rattle and post it tonight.
Anyone know what it is?

I recorded the rattle. It's actually louder than what the camera recorded, but you can barely hear it after each rev (when it's decelerating)

I noticed it rattles only between 2500 to 3000 rpm with either the clutch disengaged (pedal to the floor) or in neutral. It also rattles when going over speedbumps. I'm starting to think it might not be the transmission, but some loose metal plate somewhere. I still can't explain why it only does it when it's cold and not after driving the car for 1-2 minutes. Today the rattle was even louder than before. I checked the catback exhaust, its not it...

Anyone have any ideas what could be the rattle.

I hear lots of belt noise.

Does it change with the AC on / off? My AC compressor rattles.

It sounds the same when the AC is on or off.

Issue resolved.
The heatshield covers on the downpipe were rubbing on the two cross bars.
I removed the bottom heatshield and no more rattle.
