With the 8 5th you should come out to Nevada for the Silver State next september
Yep that sounds about right. Nevada eh?

Yep. The Evo 8 5th gear is good for about 15ish more mph at the same rpm from what I've seen.

www.silverstateclassic.com

I ran 318 in the dark last weekend...it was even easy then. It might be a tow, but it will be a good time with a bunch of fast cars and hopefully one or two fast Mitsus...

Is it recommended to get a longer 3rd gear with the 4th gear or only get the 4th gear?

How much would everything cost you including 3rd 4th and longer 5th with double syncros?

have you considered changing the final drive ratio to the 3.73? If more top end is what you're after then that would probably be your best bet, would make all the gears a little taller. It is listed as an option on TRE's website, they give a chart that shows approx. mph. Topps out at 181 I think.

I'm not just looking for top end. lol

I just need a longer 4th and 5th and I'm set. Those gears will do everything I need them to do.

What exactly is it you need the longer 5th gear to do?

Because this is the way Mitsubishi had the VIII's. When they brought out the Evo 9's with the revised 4th gear they also revised the 5th gear why? Because its too short. They shortened 4th gear so they had to shorten 5th gear too. You can't have gears that far apart. These cars aren't exactly torque monsters like most V8's.

Evo 8 4th gear with an Evo 9 5th gear = not good. Its just too short for my likings and obviously Mitsubishis.

I have the Evo 8 4th gear with evo 9 5th gear and I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's a very smooth transition. IMO unless you want the evo 8 5th gear for better fuel economy on the highway or a standing mile car it is pointless to put it in as it should not be used for drag racing.

235/40/18s will only allow me to trap 126 with a 8k limiter. I usually hit the limiter about 100 feet or so before the traps. The car is a stock geared 04.

Just get the Evo VIII 4th gear and your set. That's what I got with my Buschwacker tranny..and my top end is pretty nasty

I would leave 5th gear alone.... you would have much better accelleration using the EVO 8 4th gear going into the EVO 9 5th gear as it would already be in its sweet spot.

The EVO 9 3rd gear is also a little too short and you could benefit from going with the EVO 8 3rd gear.

The ultimate tranny is EVO 9 ---- 1,2&5 with EVO 8 ---- 3&4.

I would not even consider the taller 5th gear or double sycros as there is no reason to bang 5th gear.

so for better top end and a street/highway car, the best would be Evo 9 transmission 1st and 2nd with Evo 8 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears?

would that give good acceleration with nice top end, right?

Well heres the thing. Right now with an Evo 9 trans I feel like 5th gear bogs when I go into it. When I shifted @ 8k in 4th gear in my current trans it dropped me all the way back to like 5900-6k which isn't really close to my peak power which is made around 7000-7500.

This would of course all be fixed if I had a built engine/head and could rev out to 8500.

What I'm thinking is since the Evo 8 4th gear is longer it would put me higher up in the revs when going into my Evo 9 5th which would mean I would probably drop back to around 6500 rpms instead of 6k.

On the flipside though when I get past a certain point in 5th it seems like I just get to 160 too fast.

I'm still unsure of what I'm going to do. Going to talk to shep when he gets the trans tell him what I plan on doing and what he thinks would benefit me best.

I found some gear ratios with mph of the Evo 8 and 9.

Speed with stock final drive, 7500 RPM:

---------------------- 4th ------- 5th
VIII 5 Speed ------ 121.7 ---- 174.3
IX GSR 5 speed----114.5 --- 164.9

Yes you will definitely be at a higher rpm shifting into the Evo 9 5th gear with an Evo 8 4th gear but I highly doubt you would need to shift to 5th with the added rpms the Evo 8 4th gear will give you.

What does your car currently trap in the 1/4 mile?

Really don't know...last time I went to the track they had me drive right through the waterbox so when I launched I spun all first and some of second gear and I hit the 8200 rev limiter in 4th @ 119 before crossing the beams.

So with a good launch I should be around mid 120's or more.
