Question Need help Smoke from exhaust after new parts install

Hi guys. Long story short- my friend has an Mitsubishi Eclipse 4g63 AWD Turbo. Sorry not an EVO problem similar though, but I thought someone could help the guy out quick.
He bought it few months ago. It was modded before but returned to somewhat stock condition. He bought a bunch of new mods and a local performance shop installed them for him. Here is the PROBLEM - after all the parts were installed, my friend and a guy from the shop took a test drive, after few blocks some weird clicking noises, lots of smoke from the exhaust with a smell of burnd oil and the car dies and doesnt start right away. Starts after many tries of after a push start.
Now shop is saing that they dont know what it could be. What can he do if it happened on the drive around the shop? Who do u think is responsible? Test drive was after he paid the bill.
Car was not tuned.

Also after a clutch/flywheel installed he could barely put it in 1st gear and reverse.
I told him that it could be the clutch pedal not being adjusted.

Any quick guesses guys? Turbo blown?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance guys

Sounds like the "shop" should stick to oil changes!!! Your buddy paid for a service, not to have his car break/blow up on the test drive. That shop needs to fix its mistakes!

Compression test. Shop should pay for damages.

i would do a compression test. sounds like head trouble. Check the radiator for a "chocolate milk" looking liquid inside. This is where oil begins to leak into your coolant. Meaning cracked head....... DSM NIGHTMARE... happens to the best of them. Post if you find the problem.

First of all, why wasn't the car tuned after having installed aftermarket cams and adjustable cam gears?

I was really surprised too, what was the point of going wot without a tune and stuff. As far as I know the shop did not pick up the bill.

4G63 DSMs are becoming old cars. I'd classify many of the items in your list as maintenance or repairs. So, the car before the work wasn't in the best of shape. Maybe the shop screwed up the timing belt install. Maybe the engine blew from old age. It is going to take a hands on examination to tell what happened.
