I had he death whine sometime ago..indeed from inside the car its difficult to localize it. it only happened on deceleration too.
Later we found it was 2 bearings in the rear diff (AYC version), which I replaced (got it from mitsubishi for less than 70$) and that solved my problem. I also changed fluids to OEM Diaqueen. At the time i was running Amsoil in the whole drivetrain but I can't say for certain whether that was the problem.
Since then I've put down tons of hard launched (6-7k), donuts, and some track driving and I haven't had any problems.

Do you have the AMS Mostashe bar delete? I just got an Evo that I know had a transfer case whine but I installed the AMS kit and it sounds like it is coming from the rear diff.
I hope I don't have to change that as well.

PATRICK B., nah sorry I didn't take a sound clip.
But i guess my best description would be the sorta whine you get from a dog box.....you know those in-car videos of race cars with dog boxes, as they accelerate you get a whine which increases?
Well the only difference is this one happens only on decel and it 'decreases'.
Maybe someone else can chime in to refine my description.

well..for everyone else...mine whines on Decel and accelaration...and starts the whine from about 15 mph and is very loud at 65 and extremely unbearable at 75mph... my new diff should be on the way here now..cant wait to get it and solve the issue...**hopefully**
