I put a transfer case in mine this weekend and it fixed the noise for me. I hope the rear diff will fix yours.

hahahaha omg... ive been ****ting bricks for months... ive put over 3k on my car since i started getting the death whine... i thought it was the tcase.. i havent taken it apart to look, but i'm broke going to UTI in houston for auto-technology and i knew i didnt have the money for a tcase!!! heres the story...

a while back i did a clutch swap to an act 6-puck cerametallic (would recommend to anyone!!! great clutch and feel) 3 weeks later i started hearing the whine... soon found out what the "death whine" was and thought i was a goner...

my car held together for over 3k miles and 2 weeks ago, babying the car, i backed out of my parking spot at school and pop pop pop pop sounded like there were loose bolts in the driveline somewhere... drove it at 25-30 in 4th the 2 miles back to my apt... its been sitting there since...
a few days after i heard the whine i took it into the shop at school and drained the tcase and the rear end... there were shaving all over the rear end drain plug, but nothing in the transfer case... i was like "oh great" now im gona have to replace this TOO!!!

everyone ive talked to has said it has to be the T-case, but it makes sooo much sense now...

ima check it out ASAP!!!

thanks guys!!! im gona try and take it apart tonight!!!

I have a whine in my MR. It only does it on decel from about 65 to 40mph. Been like this for about 8k miles and only started I swear since the dealer touched it. I don't think its the rear diff because when I put in the clutch it goes silent then I engage the clutch say 6th to 5th downshift and its loud again. Get below 40mph and its silent. Anybody have a clue what that is?

the first photo is of my rear diff drain plug before i did anything with it...

the second photo shows all the shavings and metal that came off on a paper towel... all off of the drain plug...

and the third photo is the rear end oil with about 2500-3000 miles tops on it!!! you can tell it has ALOT of suspended metal shavings in it...

Final Conclusion... the death whine is not a "tranfer case ONLY" deal... nasty nasty...

Can the whine come from the tranny??
I get a whine when I go over 130mph in 6th gear, and sometimes when I down shift, and it came from the front, now the tranny need to be replaced cuz I can't shift in to 3rd or 4th

Keep this thread alive everyone. If you had this issue and now fixed, please post suggestions.

I too am currently having this issue. When decelerating in 5th gear from 3k rpm down, a very audible whine is noticeable. My car is still stock w/ only about 15k so miles.

Below is a good example of what it sounds like when decelerating.

death whine in here to. waiting for my tax money to come in a send it off to shep.

i think i messed up both the rear diff and the t-case.

i had a real bad whine that it sounded like it was coming from the rear. put the car up on the left and you can hear it at the rear.

so i replaced the rear (bought a use one off here). put it in and damn it. it's still their. the death whine.but it's not as loud as it was before. that where i think it was both.

so i took over the AWD Mototrsports ( BTW awsome shop, Mike is a nice guy along with everyone else that works their). they told me that they 99.99999% sure that it is the T-case.

i am kind of iffy on buying a use T-case off here. that is a part of the car you really don't want to buy used. that is my opinion. so i guess i am going to have my re-built by shep.

then maybe if i have some more money left over i might have my rear diff re-build. nothing wrong with having 2 rear diffs.
