Shifting Gears

Ok, My Evo when shifting into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and even 5th will make a clunk, notchy noise/ feel at the top of engagement. I have installed the new clutch line and thought that it helped a bit , but it is still there.

I want to know if everyone has this issue, or if thier shifts are smooth?

I have had this into the dealership twice for this , and the tech said it is common for this car to do this. I find this odd because how many evos have they had to compair with. They have only sold 3 of them? He also said the Gsx's had a very notchy shifter, nothing to worry about, its common.

Is this the syncros not lining up? It happens about 75% of the time. I just think down the road my tranny is going to need to be replaced, and hope a new one will be better.

Thanks for your input.

if it's notchy and solid, then it's normal. the evo tranny has the elements of a strong tranny. mine is very notchy and feels like the shifter is thrown into whatever gear without me doing much. i wouldnt worry about it. its normal

when u start hearing grinding, that's when u worry

I have never heard any noise from shifting gears like that. I am sitting at 6,000 miles right now in my Evo, and never ground a gear, missed a shift, or hard launched the car. I have owned 2 Eclipse GSX's and neither of them ever had a notchy feel to them, even after aftermarket clutches were installed and tons of other parts changes that should have made them "less" streetable.

Perhaps this is just your driving style?

I'm glad you started this thread, or else I would have. Even when I concentrate at shifting, I will still get the notchiness. It happens more often when the car is warmed up. I also thought the steel clutch line would fix this problem, and it did smooth out my 2nd to 3rd gear shift, but it made my 3rd to 4th gear shift worse. 1st to 2nd gear is often notchy and makes the loudest noise of them when it notches.

There has to be a better explanation to this than, "it is common for this car to do this." They say that to everything about the Evo.

Ya 99,,,, 2nd to 3rd is more noticable than before the line was installed. Going from first to 2nd, that someone mentioned before, is ok if you move the shifter to the left at the middle to bottom of 2nd gear?

And it isnt my shifting style, I mean, it dosnt take a space monkey to know how to shift a car. What I do notice is that if you take the car to upper rpm's while shifting, the ruff, notchy feel isnt there as it is when shifting at normal driving rpms, (3-4000rpm's)

I still think Mits. is going to have to have some type of recall on this at some point and time. Or else have to replace alot of syncros. That is replace them for people that havnt modded thier Evo's.

It just makes me chringe every time this happens, takes the fun out of driving this car. I long for a buttery smooth shift.

But then again, I really dont know of any other car out there that can be as much fun to drive as this car. I rented a C5 convert. a few weeks ago and drove it to the Grand Canyon. The convert. was awsome, along with the looks of the Vette, but I swear it felt like an Impala compared to my Evo. It was truley a very strange and exciting experience wrapped in one. The Evo feels like point and shoot car, while the C5 felt like driving a fridge. LOLOLOL

Perhaps you guys are comming from cars that have a direct link between the shift lever and the shift forks, like you would find in a front engine/rear wheel drive car. The Evo is cable actuated, and thus it will always feel a little different. Also, are you speed matching your shifts or just changing gears?

blipping the throttle while downshifting to make sure the clutch engages right where the RPM will be when the clutch pedal is fully extended. Also make sure that you fully depress the clutch pedal before even trying to change gears, and make sure you release the clutch pedal at the proper RPM on the upshift. This will prevent the RPM from going from 5000, clutch in, shift, rpm sinks to 2000, clutch out, rpm jumps to 3000, apply throttle.....

That is the best way that I can describe it.

My shift stick is not as smooth shifting from 2nd into 3rd. It surely felt like an inefficient syncro. I have no problem downshifting.

I used to have that problem, til I replaced my clutch line with a stainless steel one. 1st to 2nd is annoying though.

I wish more people would respond to this.
I think Mits needs to look at doing some kind of recall on the snycros!

absolutely not! i think there are a very small group of people that have this "problem". There is no chance that there will be a recall. Just learn how to shift
