Awesome responses guys, pics would be fantastic. I'd like to compile any pics I can and make a big how-to on this. If it can be done with the dash in place that would be fantastic, taking it out for this swap seems silly; does the harness coming through the firewall go anywhere except right to the ECU? Does this also include the ODB2/flash ports? others?

Please, be as specific as possible! Thank you!

I just finished the swap and got her running. The swap was cake, I just overlooked a plug and it was running sloppy at first. Now it's all worked out, just needs a fresh tune.

Removal of the dash was pretty essential. A lot of plugs and wires back there that couldn't be reached with the dash in place.

I love it!

I have an EVO 9 Head for sale on eBay in case anyone is interested in doing the swap. Contact me via PM and I can work a deal with you.

I am selling all the EVO9 head sensors needed to make this happen separately from the head unless you need both!

You cannot do that, you have to run a 9 ECU and 9 engine harness. The 8 computer will not control the MIVEC. If that won't happen then what's the point of swapping to a 9 head.

You could always run the few extra wiring bits yourself without having to go through the pain of doing the entire IX wiring harness swap.

Auto Sport Wiring in Texas makes fantastic harnesses. They will do custom orders, and pinouts. I'm sure if you told Richard what you wanted (EVO IX plugs on one end, EVO VIII plugs on the other, with a custom pinout) he could make it up for you real quick.

He custom made something similar for my Motec M800 install in an EVO IX and I had it in 2 days.

You are missing the point here, the EVO8 ECU WILL NOT control the MIVEC sensors and will NOT run them. You NEED to swap to the EVO9 ECU.

Basically get an EVO9 wiring harness and EVO9 ECU, swap them out and you are good to go.

What point am I missing? I've suggested that you use an adapter harness to run an evo ix ecu in an evo viii. Why else would I suggest different plugs and a custom pinout?

Not to be rude but perhaps you should re-read my post. The main issue is harness cost. If you can get one cheap from a parted out car that's probably the way to go. Otherwise a new harness from the dealer is way more than an adapter harness from ASW and a little scrounging at a junkyard for the appropriate connectors to add whatever else is needed wiring wise over the stock VIII harness.

I did read your post and I am trying to tell you guys, it's so much easier to swap out the harness. There have been two guys that already have done it this way and they suggested the same thing I am suggesting after attempting to use the 8 harness.

You can get a used 9 harness used for around $300, for $300 is that really worth all the headaches and not knowing you have the right pins in the rights places?

You are correct in saying that you "can" do it. But, at what cost and time. There are plenty of things you "can" do on any car with the right cost and time, but does it make sense? In this case no, buy a 9 harness and you are done. That's all I am trying to say, I just don't want to see someone attempt something that others have attempted and said how horrible it was and then waste all that time and money and end up having to buy a 9 harness anyway.

Yes. .....if you can source a used engine loom and ecu, it's pretty straightforward.
