Which Engine Oil is the Best
#212
A significant amount of overall engine wear is inflicted during cold starts. In a nutshell, those who live in temperate climates where summer-like temperatures prevail for most of the year, a 10w-XX to 20w-XX oil is appropriate. For those who routinely start their engines in freezing conditions, a 0w-XX to 10w-XX is better.
I should mention there is nothing wrong with running 10w-XX to 20w-XX during hot months and 0w-XX to 10w-XX in winter. For many of us who deal with warm summers and moderate winters, a 10w-XX is a good fit for year-round service.

gotcha thanks for clarifyin ted, thats what i kinda figured so with too. Think if the wrong weight of oil in winter like a 20w50 the more the engine will be starved of oil upon initial startup for the next minute during cold start...which could cause premature wear eventually...so now im curious in your guys area where you have extremely cold climates, would a 5w30 be appropriate? or a 5w20? im sayin that cuz the 20 weight would be a thinner oil, but also be in the optimal winter range you know.. but the 30 weight being a little thicker would provide a little better protection in the combustion chamber...?? i mean have any of u guys that dynod with that thin of an oil?? i would assume the 5w20 you could theoretically make more horsepower, although run more risk of thermal breakdown with the lighter weight oil??

How long does it take for oil to heat up where your good to go wot? I dont have a oil temp gauge but i hear once the cars temp gauge gets in the middle the oil should be hot to do whatever but im not really buyin it since people have had there temp gauge in the middle and oil temp gauge wasnt hot enough so i dunno?
