My new friend has a zinc plating company, what do you guys think if I remove a whole bunch of metal engine parts, heat shield, bolts, nuts, brackets, etc. as much as I can remove and get them plated in zinc?
he showed me examples of some engine parts that he did years ago, they still looked like new.

Minus the aesthetic purposes why would one want to do this? I wonder what the properties of zinc are? Maybe it will keep the heat in...but it could also reflect heat...If i remember correctly shiny metallic surfaces have a tougher time getting the heat out in comparison to something which is completely flat black.

the zinc will stop the rust from forming on all those bolts and nuts for one thing yes aesthetics, its not shiny more of an eggshell finish closer to flat side.
most cars what I was told use zinc plated parts, they resist corrosion more.
also the only thing that will get hot really is the header heat shield.

I took off a whole bunch of bolts, heat plate's, brackets etc over the weekend. (i hope i can remember where they all go back LOL)
Im removing my exhaust header today too.
this week pics will be posted.
I cant wait to see what the heat shields and radiator supports look like finished.

Basically, all of the load bearing hardware are already coated with zinc. Aluminum doesn't need it. Zinc doesn't add strength, but as is already said, resists corrosion and inhibits the electrolysis process (battery effect which is basically how corrosion starts).
