Different techniques on dropping subframe

Out of curiosity, has anyone dropped the subframe by removing the front and rear engine mounts only (leaving the right and left mounts attached to the motor and tranny)? This should allow the subframe to be safely lowered with the engine still attached to the frame of the car. Any input?

that seems to be correct. the other two mounts are the only ones attached to the subframe... it would just be harder to get to all the bolts and power steering components

That will work, but remove the rear mount from the transmission first. Access it from the top. Remove the two bottom 14mm bolts first because the third one, which is on the driver's side of the mounting plate, will not come out all the way. When reinstalling, tighten the one nut that doesn't fully come out first, but not full tight. This will allow the mounting plate to press flush enough to get the last two bolts inserted and started. The tighten the first nut full tight followed by the other two. You really do not want to mess with that 12mm long shank bolt going into the smaller latitudinal bushing, unless you have very long skinny fingers. Don't forget the 12mm bolt holding the steering column in place behind the gas pedal, and make sure you remove the bolt for the power steering line sitting on top of the passenger side engine mount.

Of course, there are the two bolts (14mm and 19mm) and one nut (19mm) each side holding up the subframe to remove. No need to remove the two cross beams.
