Angry Boost leak test and trange results...

So here I am preparing my evo for a tune on race gas...

I block the pipe going to the intake manifold and rigged up a system with a tire valve and the air compressor....

no pressure build up! and air is coming out of the red arrow in the pic...
this goes to my oil catch can

Ive got the HKS 3037 oil and water cooled gt series turbo.... does this mean that the gasket in the turbo is gone or am i lost somewhere because this doesn't make sense to me

if i block the hole i get some pressure build up but dont let it get high at all as im puzzled how the heck its getting there....

I have no idea how that contraption is working out for you but that doesn't look like the correct way to do it.

Anyhow, are you doing the test with the motor at TDC?

I blocked the pipe (upper right)
and plugged into the intake of the turbo and pressurized...

I would suspect that if there was a leak where the oil cools the turbo shaft air can get into there and into the oil system?!...

It's a closed circuit for the inter cooler piping only so TDC doesn't matter int his case for pressure testing...

Whoever told you to do a boost leak test like that - never take advice from them again.

- Put your UICP back onto the TB, tighten it down and start pressurizing again.

^ ok I will do that, but logically i'm only testing the inter cooler piping this way and am still puzzled as to why there is air coming into the head...

Once that solved I will test the whole system...

+1..... also u have to cap off that niple on the valve cover... i put a screw at the end of a vaccum line

Guys, thanks for the advice...

But right now i need to know how come when i have created what is supposed to be a closed circuit I have air coming into the valve cover?

The only place is where the turbo shaft is cooled by oil, perhaps there is a dammaged seal or something.

I'm more interested in the mechanical side and understanding why this is happening...

Ive simply isolated the intercooler piping then will move onto the vacuum lines...

Is that BOV a knockoff? Air could be leaking past the diaphragm into the intake manifold and then back through the PCV and out the valve cover breather. Try it with the line disconnected from the BOV.

Also, yeah, put your UICP back on (and if you are leaking through the exhaust set to TDC).

disconnect the bov hose. then re-try & see if that is where your leak source is coming from...

why is everyone upset that this guy is trying to isolate a certain area of his i.c. piping?

it wouldnt matter if he removed all the pistons & cylinder head, the way he has it set-up......

are there any other boost hoses going to the engine that cant be seen?

Ok, isolated the BOV no success still coming out from the valve cover... opened the oil cap and can hear bubling when pressuring up...

also, no oil in intercooler piping...clean as a whistle which makes me think twice about a bad seal surely when the car is idling and no boost the oil pressure would make it flood into the cold side...
seems as though its a one way thing...

scratching my head puzzled... no shaft play ont he turbo basically brand new...

but will go have an in depth look again...
to answer Aby's question... no other hoses

is there something special about the hks 30 37 that im unaware of?...

disconnect the oil feed line for the turbo.....you should be getting air past / through there....but you never know...

definately a strange 1.

Remove the boost controller from the system, and block any vacuum tap points on the intercooler pipes, and compressor, if there is one. Then re-test.

That should isolate the cold side, intercooler, and pipes.

Very odd.
