A/C Problem

When I first turn on the a/c it blows nice and cold, but then turns to just vented air. It's like the compressor kicks off or something. It will cycle like this every few minutes. It'll blow cold and I can hear/feel the compressor then it's just like I turn it to vent or something and the compressor kicks off. Anyone have any ideas about this? Could it be a sensor or something?

Perhaps a low pressure switch on the ac unit activating. If the freon in the unit is low enough it will work but only for a short time. But I dunno just making a guess here and its easy to check with one of those silly snap on gauges when the unit is running.

I looked on my car but did not see it. Where is the clutch cycling switch on these cars?

Well there are actually two switches on our cars. One is built into the compressor as a temp sensor. The other is a pressure switch on the high pressure line on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Just look on the passenger side for the aluminum line with a cap labled with a "H". The switch should be very close to it.

I wouldn't try to bypass the pressure switch... Check the pressure in the unit first.

You were having the same problem? Was it low pressure?

I would assume so did you check your pressure in the ac unit using the low pressure side port and one of those refill kits you can buy at autozone?

Yea I checked it and I was getting about 35-40 lbs. It says that it should be 50-55 so I decided to put some in. I got 1 can in and started on the 2nd when the clutch disengaged. I haven't had a chance to pop the hood and finish the 2nd can yet. The clutch only stays engaged now for about 5-10 minutes. Once it disengages it doesn't come back on until I turn off the car and let it cool.

You went through a whole can?

You must have a serious leak I suggest having the unit looked at by a professional.

Well it is now holding between 50-55, but the clutch still disengages after it's been on for awhile. While letting it idle I can see the clutch engage when the fan kicks on for about 2 or 3 seconds then goes off with the fan. It will then come back on about 10 seconds later and stay on while the fan is on for 2 or 3 seconds. It keeps repeating this cycle.

I think its supposed to cycle. Pretty much as long as the air is cool coming out the other side what does it matter?

I'm more a commercial air tech and home than a car tech though. I know commercial and home units cycle to prevent the temp from falling too low.
