Not really sure. This is a brand new bottom end from ams. Had 40 miles on it all below 3500rpm. Never boosted above 5lbs.

Ah, my bad --- tracking with you now. Definitely pull and ship --- that's not what you want your car to sound like right out of the box.

I guess that I'm going to have too. Sucks though. I spent well over $5,000 on just the bottom end in this car and now I gotta rip it all back apart. Thats not to mention the $180 worth of tranny fluid, and t-case fluid im gonna loose, all the gaskets, head gasket, the new oil and water pump. I spent my whole vacation getting this thing to run, and it all goes to waste... man wtf...

A sound clip would help. But also does it still clank when the motor warms up?

Now that I think about it, that wouldnt make any sense. I remember when there was no head on it the pistons would reach TDC and the mark would be dead on.

Even at TDC, if your valve pockets aren't designed for a high lift cam, you'll clip the valves on the crowns...

Had the Tomei 280, but never installed due to stock valvetrain. I figured I'd break the engine in on the stockers, and then move to BR/Kelford 272 before the serious tuning began.

Find the problem.
Exactly, check everything possible first.

Does the noise ever go away? After the car is driven hard and is at full temperature, does the noise still exist? If so, it's probably not the pistons. Yes, the coated pistons will slow heat transfer through the piston, but not enough to prevent the pistons from expanding after a bit of hard driving.

The timing marks will only change when going from a 2.0 to a 2.4 block. The physical deck height difference is what causes the timing marks to change.
