Tranny & Diff Fluid Choices...

Ok, I'm having my tranny and diff fluids changed out very soon and I'd like some recommendations as to what to get. Now, there should be 4 things that need to be changed, if I'm correct:

Transmission - 3qts GL-4 75w90
Transfer Case - 1qt GL-5 90w
Center Diff - 1.5qts
Rear Diff - 1.5qts

I've heard Redline, BG Syncroshift, and Royal Purple mentioned the most. Pros/Cons?

Any input as to where to get them online as well. I will be looking locally too.

I have all redline for my tranny and diff. cases. perfect for the syncro gears. I shift fast all the time and never ever missed a gear yet.

The transfer and rear diff are both just over 1/2 quart each. I think the manual claims 0.57qts. There is no separate center diff fluid, it's just in there with the tranny.

Get 3 quarts Redline MT90 for the transmission/center diff and 2 quarts (total) of Redline 75W90 for the rear diff and transfer case.

You can also use Amsoil 75w90 for transfer case, tranny, and rear diff (either regular Amsoil or their premium brand, Series 2000).

WRC4ever: Sure can. In fact I used Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 in my rear diff because my local shop didn't stock Redline 75W90 (though they did stock MT90 and the Shockproofs).

My car is a bit of a fluid mutt with MT90 in the tranny, lightweight shockproof in the transfer, and the Amsoil in the rear diff.

I have BG Syncroshift in the tranny. Most DSM shops don't recommend MT90. I have ShockProof on the floor waiting to be changed...

Regular Amsoil 75w90 or Series 2000 75w90 all the way!! Approved for limited slip diffs.
A lot of our rally cars use the Amsoil lubes... the mechanics rave about it.

5star: Just don't use the Shockproof in the rear LSD. Not enough friction modifier for the clutches to break free at low speed operation.

There's also GM Syncromesh which has gotten higher marks than BG Syncroshift by some users. Available at GM dealers.

Don't bother with shockproof man, at least not heavy weight. I'm running it now and it does not help the synros or the decel noise. I'm about to go to mt90 for the tranny.

Also got a pm from a guy that metioned omega gear oil... said it stopped the decel noise on his evo V (I think it was a V). So I may try that.

Why?

And who are "most" DSM shops?

So it sounds (excluding 5Star's post) like Redline MT90 for the Trans/center diff, and Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 for the rear diff / xfer case are the way to go. Yes?

Hey all,

First, MT-90 works well in the transaxle, since Mitsubishi specifies a GL-4 fluid, which MT-90 fulfills. Perhaps the DSM tranny doesn't specify a GL-4 fluid, in which case MT-90 would not be a good fit. On Nasioc, people reported bad experience with MT-90 in the WRX, but the WRX specifies GL-5 fluids for the tranny.

Anyway, I used Redline MT-90 in the transaxle. The transfer case and rear diff specify a GL-5 fluid, so I used NEO RHD. This is what I used in my wife's WRX and many on Nasioc reported good results with it. It's spendy, about $20/quart. Anyway, I'm happy with the results. Improved shifting action, smoothness, and decreased decel noise. I replaced fluids at ~3500 rpm, and I'm looking to do it again at ~10K miles with the same fluids. I did have a fair amt of metal debris on the magnetic plugs, and I'm hoping there is a lot less at the next change.

Take care,

FB

Wow, that must have been difficult replacing it while it's running at 3500rpm...

Well as long as the car isn't in gear, it shouldn't be too bad.
