Second gear won't go in

Having a problem second gear won't go in. The tranny has just been replaced due to worn out synchros so it's probably not the tranny. If I shift at high rpms it goes in but if I'm driving normal it won't go in at all. All other gears work fine. Could it be the clutch?

Is it stiff? Does it grind? If you get it in to 2nd does it stay or pop out?

It doesn't grind when it DOES go in. When it DOESN'T it's plain stiff

How do 4th and reverse feel? Take a look at the cables and make sure they arent binding up on anything near the tranny.

4th goes in no problem. Reverse is a little stiff but it goes in. Checked the engine bay to see if anythings in the way but nope. Strange become sometime it goes in fine and then starts not going in. Could it be the tranny fluid going bad?

What fluid are you using? Does it make a difference if the tranny is hot or cold?

two things to do....

first - check the clips that hold the shift cables in place. If they do not click into place properly the cables can shift up a little bit which prevents you from getting the tranny in gear. It doesn't take much slop for this to cause a problem

second - if there is nothing wrong with the cables, get a solid front motor mount. You wont believe the difference it makes. I have a built transmission and I too had problems getting in to second until I got a solid front mount... it solved all my problems.

where would I be able to check those clips at? I'm not that mechanically inclined sorry also what front motor mounts do you recommend? I don't think it's a clutch problem cause even with the engine off it still has problems trying to go into second gear

Look under the car. there is a motor mount in the cross member. that is the one I believe he is referring to. But if you are having trouble shifting with the car off as well. Sounds like a tranny issue. Just a thought.

I would really check those clips. If you are looking into the car you see the motor mount on the driver side look around that area you will see the shift cables. The clips on them.

also I have issues on my first start on cold days, Hold the clutch in, start the car when I release the clutch it is if the clutch is engaged and it stalls out immediatly when releaseing the clutch, now when I start the second time its fine, I still feel it grab a bit, but it does not stall out.
