What is this noise????

** FINAL UPDATE ** 10/2/2009

Okay so i took my car back to the shop wensday and it turned out to be the balance shaft belt being 180 degrees out of phase! thanks max4rw for helpin me out with the problem.

I guess in conclusion of this ordeal, for anyone that gets a 60k service done, remember it isnt a performance upgrade, everything should feel the same...I know that a pretty obvious thing now that i think of it, but i didnt know going into it lol. Also vibrating metal on metal sound after 60k service, around 4k RPMS is more than likely your BALANCE SHAFT BELT BEING OUT OF PHASE! get that checked first before spending money on other possible problems

Thanks a lot guys and hope this thread helps out those experiencing the same problem. Lastly, there is nothing like your Evo running like "normal" and how it used too once its fixed!!

Thanks all!

** UPDATE!!!** 9/25/2009

So i think I have finally nailed the hammer on the head, of course with the help of my fellow evo friends in town.

The balance shaft belt is off timing. This makes perfect sense considering that it didnt start to happen until after i got the service, including the balacne shaft belt replaced. Also that would explain why it felt "rougher". I can feel more vibration in the pedals and steering wheel as well, so im pretty set on it, hopefully i can get them to fix it for me.

** UPDATE!!!** 9/23/2009

OK so the cat was replaced and the noise was still there! upon further inspection, the shop told me the drive shaft yoke was causing the noise. dose this sound like a drive shaft yoke gone bad, or would that possibly be causing the noise??

just need to make sure this is what i need before i get it thanks guys!

Hey guys,

so i got my 60k service done yesterday and since then i have been getting this annoying rattling noise coming from the exhaust (i think), whenever i rev past 4K or so. it also happens when i drive..... I almost want to say it is coming straight from the catalytic converter but im not sure.

The clatter you hear after the revs is clutch clatter. 60k with stock clutch, i think its time to get a new one lol or they are just loud, so i have been told.

Also i have GSC S1 cams installed in the car.

lastly i did notice that after the service my car seemed like it was a little louder and dronier than before. Nopt by a lot but for sure noticeable.

any help???

thanks guys,
-Solley

That's interesting, as you're not the first person to report this. Do they disconnect the downpipe for the 60K service? If so, did they re-use the old gasket between the DP and cat, or do they replace it?

I talked to the person who did the 60k today and they said they didn't disconnect anything, I'm gonna bring it in tomorrow and see what he has to say about it, Im hoping its nothing big

I think it be a waste of money unless your tuning it yourself. Just retune after your next power upgrade

Drive shaft anything??? I don't think so, your car is not even moving, it just doesn't sound correct to me. The yoke of a driveshaft is normally some tripod in the outboard cup......makes no sense to me....
In addition its only at a specific rpm

Check for heat shields that are cracked/lose, missing hardware etc..... in my experience I have found this to be the issue many times (not on evo's though)....I think it is a frequency thing, hence why you hear it at a specific engine speed

this same exact problem also happened to me almost to a T. I took my car to a mitsu service center to get the 60k service done. When I picked the car up, I heard that same noise. I took the car back and they put it back on the lift. The service tec heard the noise and was convinced that my perrin hfc cat was cause.
Which didn't make sense because when I took the car there, there was absolutely no noise!! Since he seemed so certain I took the car home and took the hfc off and inspected it. It looked like the honey comb was coming apart on the outer layers, so I was like fu*ck it im gonna turn this thing in to a test pipe so that way I can be sure its not the cat cause the problem.
(BAD IDEA) I took the car for a test drive and still got the noise and over boosted and blew off uicp to dv scared the shi* out of me. So at this point im pissed, bc I did all this for nothing and now I need a tune. (I scheduled a tune with scott at ttp which was the only person who could shine some light on this whole mess)
First Obviously I took the car back to mitsu and raised hell, so they put it back on the lift. Now they were claiming the noise was coming from the drive shaft and that one part of it had gone bad. So that i was gonna have to replace the whole thing!! Then they were convinced this was the problem never did they consider that they might have installed the timing belt out of phase or even know that, that what was causing the noise.
At this point you can only imagiane my frustration! So I leave and on my way home I decided to call scott at ttp and discuss this with him Immediately he knew what it was and told me to take the car back and tell the service tec to re-do the timing belt because it was 180 degres out of phase so I took it back and told the service tec this. He than visually inspected and said that the timing belt was not out of phase! I called scott back (who was so great threw all of this) and he got on the phone with the the service tec and literally had to explain to them why the the timing belt was out of phase and what they needed to do to fix it. After all of this the service tec finely did the job right and the problem was solved!! this was such a nightmare, you think that when you take your car into a certified mitsu service center they should know what their doing but they defiantly don't!! So if you reed all of this, sorry I know it was a long #1.Basically don't take your car to a dealer and if you do, don't hesitate to second guess their knowledge.# 2.find a good shop in your area that knows the evo inside and out even if its 3 hours away take your car there its worth it!

thata crazy man, i cnt believe that this problem is exactly like what im going through. was it the timing belt? or was the balance shaft belt out of time for u?

also did the noise happen at 4k RPM and was it like a metal against metal vibrating noise? I was told that my balance shaft belt is outta time so hopefully the shop will redo the service without charging me again.

thanks for your help man!

Its the front balance shaft.

There is no front balance shaft belt. It is spun by the timing belt, the same belt as the crank and cam gears.
