be careful, each time you fail they might charge you

at least you don't live in CA

they're very uptight about emissions here so there are many checks and balances. even the results are immediately reported to the state so IF you had a friend working at smog check they couldn't hook you up

it may be the same in MD

mitsumanny: this is correct, no more sniff test.
in IL you have 2 tries i think after 2nd one they will direct you to drive
the car for inspection, they inspect entire car to find out why you cant
pass emission.

to all:

you have to drive the car for at least 80-100 miles so computer reads all the codes, worst ones are emmision codes that takes quite a bit...

you can have (one) code NOT READY. EVAP which takes even longer.

thats at least for IL.

DO NOT reset the code and go right away to emmision because you wont!
pass, read the code, check it, fix it. if you have no cat, get o2 bung.

putting a o2 bung on the o2 sensor will defiantly work. they are on ebay for like 15 bucks then erase the codes and drive it for a 100 miles then run it threw emissions.

Excellent, thank you so much guys. A lot of good input here.

I am going to buy the o2 bung and install it then wait a couple days (100 miles) to get all the codes back then take it up and get it tested again.

in california, no cat= autofail. along with any other things they find upon inspection. of course, there are some shops that just pass the visual and go for the sniffer test. no codes, good emissions, you're golden.

You dont need the stock exhaust, I have a full 3" no cat with the mechanical fix using 2 spark plug antifowlers and I passed no problem 2 weeks ago.

It's county by county in Texas. In Harris county, they do use the sniffer, so for those in Houston it ain't that easy.

Low timing at idle and cruise raise EGTs and burn off hydrocarbons. Rubbing alcohol (not E85) will help with the rest.
