I've had this whine at around 60 mph that gets louder to about 80-mph then dies off. Only when I'm on the gas, it goes away on Decel and when the clutch is engaged.

Anyways I thought it was the transfer case but It hasnt got louder and it's been over a year now. The car runs great and performs like it did day one.


So is this normal? I've seen videos of other evos on youtube and I hear the same whine but they have it the entire time. Is this normal?


Also in first gear the car whines like a SC...My 6 speed never did that but my shep 5 speed is a whinning bastard in first gear.


I'm honeslty to the point where if something is rattleing or whining I'm just going to ignore it and let it break so I know what to fix lol.

I think that overall the Evo seems to just have a noisy drivetrain. This is true of most AWD cars. That said someone who drives the car can tell when a noise is louder than it used to be and of course noises can be a sign of problems.

I have the 5 speed and I will tell you 1st gear is very noisy. I could be wrong but I suspect that it is straight cut like most reverse gears for additional strength. It sure sounds like it.

I also get a slight noise on decel in 4th and 5th. You can hardly hear it over the exhaust. I'm going to do a full fluid change and I'll report back if there's any changes.

You could try a full fluid swap on the tcase/trans/rear diff. See if it makes a difference.

well that whine wasnt there before it seems to have come after I got a new clutch..Maybe it's the clutch???

Drain the driveline fluids and if they look good then you're good.

I have a slight whine coming from the rear diff that sounds normal to me and I've heard it from other evos as well

check your transmission fluid.. whine noise could deff be ur tcase. thats no good if your tcase good bc thats $$$
