No more blown freeze plugs on water pump

We secure the freeze plugs on our race engine with some type of epoxy and what looks like two little buck rivets or something. We do it mostly because we run an extremely high pressure cooling system and it generates enough pressure to potentially blow the plugs out on it's own.

The closest most people on here will ever get to those conditions will be from head gasket failure pressurizing the cooling system. It's not a bad idea to secure the freeze plugs, especially if you consider that if you are aware enough to be doing this you should be aware enough to put anti-freeze in your cooling system and keep it from freezing in the first place.

Also like someone else said if you aren't going to do all of them you are kind of defeating the purpose.

I just installed a rebuilt water pump (rebuilt because it was cheaper and my factory pump went in 7K miles) and upon initial warm-up, it's spraying a fine stream of coolant out of the plug. Can I RTV/JB Weld this sumbish just to seal the leak? do I have any shot at knocking it back in if I do it from the rim? I'm not concerned about it popping out. If that happens I'm aware that I have much bigger problems.
I'm just tired of retiming my car. It's really hot outside. I'm lazy ETC.

Does anyone have a link to the TSBs for the 05s? My freeze plug blew out today while working on my launch map with my tuner.

Also fyi napa sells a strong strong epoxy like jb weld that is really good hot or cold

i just had my water pump freeze plug pop out after a third gear run in my 03 evo. it happened as soon as i left off the gas. im confident it isnt a h/g issue as i havent lost an ounce of coolant in over 8 months. im thinking that it might be a thermostat issue. my water pump is only 12k miles old as i got a new one when i built my engine. i have no contamination in my oil or coolant. would a bad thermostat cause this pressure build up?

also does anyone know the part number for the OEM Water Pump Freeze Plug. mine is laying on a back road somwhere haha.

The thermostat would not have any effect on the freeze plug. The freeze plug in the waterpump is on the suction side of the pump, so the pressure on the plug is regulated by the radiator cap pressure. Got a high pressure cap?

FYI Stock is 13psi, Greddy is 16psi, Mishimoto offers a 19 (!) psi cap for their radiators. Honestly if you keep coolant temps below 230*F then the stock cap pressure is fine.

Im using the stock rad cap. Idk i have know visible leaks and my fluids havent moved in months. I recently changed plugs and checked the combustion chambers with a flashlight and they were dry plus compression test was good. I javent done a leakdown test. Is there anything else that causes this but h/g and air pockets?

This is really a hit or miss. If your coolant is being pressurized its tha head gasket. In some cases could be a faulty waterpump

I'm thinking mine is faulty pump, I've driven the dog **** out of my car no coolant mixing no lost coolant.. It happen again friday night after a long trip passed someone hit fuel cut in 3rd and it popped out.. Getting a new one soon and calling it a day.

I'm replacing my water pump as soon as funds permit and having them do a leak down and compression test to make sure everything is fine.. With mine being an 05 I'm pretty sure mine is just faulty.. Like I said I've checked the coolant NO lose, oil is fine drives fine..

I just put two tack-welds around the freeze plug so it doesn't come out, but now I'm wondering if I messed up any seals in the pump by hearing it up so much? Is that possible?

It depends on how good you are at welding. If you're good you can fire up a couple tacks without heating up the whole pump too much. If you're a newbie you might need to blast the heat before a puddle forms, and too much heat will warp the freeze plug area. Or you could just buy a new pump and call it good.
