No more blown freeze plugs on water pump

Had to replace the water pump so I decided to mod the new one to insure that the freeze plug wouldn't come out. I've never had this happen but there is local guy who has had this happen twice not to mention all the post on here about it.
Anyway it's very simple to do.
1) Drill (2) 1/8" holes, from the inside out, alongside the freeze plug and through the "ears" of the pump housing.
2) Install 1/8" rivet with 1/4" grip
3) Feel relief that this will not happen to you

I dont understand the point to this. Freeze plugs are there for a reason. Would you rather have that blow out or have your block crack? Just my .02

So how do you propose to solve the problem? Great Idea IMO.

I don't commonly see that one pop out on the Evo. More commonly is the weep hole. The block also has seven additional freeze plugs so unless you do them all, you are wasting your time.

My guess is that if that area actually froze and needed that plug out the pressure from the ice would swing open that plug anyway pivoting on the rivets. It probably just keeps it from coming out easily.

I dont actually have a solution besides just leaving it alone. I have heard of people using threadlocker around the perimeter of the plug to help them stay in. In my situation when the plug popped in my waterpump it also created a leak in the weep hole. So out came the old and a new one was thrown. The plug was already installed in the waterpump from the factory.

on a friends car just this last weekend the same freeze plug popped out at the track and sprayed on his own tires(mickey thomsons) and resulted in him hitting the wall all the way across the other lane at a buck thirty. scary thought....

but not the smartest mod IMO

Most of the time this issue is linked with a headgasket sealing issue, over pressureizing the cooling system and the freeze plug is pushed out of the waterpump.

Having experienced this same exact thing I have to agree. The plug popping out has to be a sign of too much pressure in the system for whatever reason.

There is a TSB for this problem on the 05' so Mitsubishi had it happen enough that they thought is was worthy of a notice to their technicians. The cause of the occurance is purely speculation at this point. Some believe that cylinder pressure gets into the cooling system and others believe it is purely a function of the pump making enough presure to remove the plug. Their have been several here that had theirs pop out and installed a new one with red loctite or JBweld and never had the issue again. What ever the case may be I feel better with it locked in.
In regards to ice in the block, USE correct antifreeze ratio for your climate and this will never be a problem.

Yeah had mine popped a while back on my 05 evo. The dealer replaced the water pump and it has never happened again.
