Oh it's obvious, you pull the transfer case away from the tranny and you will see pretty little metal splines fall out hah. There are two tubes that run from the center diff inside the transmission to the transfer case, the outer one being for the rear and the inner one being for the front, the splines that stripped on mine were the inner or front one. The hollow shafts are very visible and easy to see defects on.

The noise in your video sounds like the beginnings of a bad wheel bearing. But I have heard similar noises coming from differentials. I would jack the the car off the ground and let it idle in first while checking the hubs and rear diff for excess noise.

well the chassis ears determined that my transfer case has a majority of the frequency.

My wheel bearings are silent .. Not a wheel bearing .. Ill be searching for another tcase.

well ive officially stumped multiple technicians including myself and 2 driveline specialists.

transfer case was swapped out .. thats not it .
transmission was rebuilt and torn apart twice. all appears good inside.
axles were changed and driveshaft was changed.

Ive run out of things to check.

I would laugh my *** off if it is a wheel bearing. Those bastards must be pricey or a ***** to install for you to avoid it for so long. The wheel bearings are calling your name.... don't resist

not as expensive as a tranny and tcase . theyre like $200

i would welcome the wheel bearings right about now .. its a big joke for everyone at my shop right now.. everything that comes in with a car we automaticly call it a wheel bearing lol.

I didn't read the whole thread, but have you swapped out the entire clutch assembly? I imagine that would be the middle point of all of the abuse, after the pedal was popped back out and being the intermediate piece between matching the speed of the engine to the transmission.

Also, to everyone that says its a wheel bearing, I don't think thats the case. The noise would still be there if he put the clutch pedal in an Jerry also mentioned that it only makes the noise under cruise, if he had a bearing failure it would be making the noise as long as the car is rolling. I've been in a car with a bad wheel bearing like 4 times in the past year. They're usually very obvious.

Edit: Have you check the input and output shafts with a straight edge to see if they have actually been twisted? Are they pitted at all?

Double edit: GOOD LUCK!!

I just read the whole thread, and no one suggested to check engine/tranny mounts, just a thought. Also, clutch release bearing.
Good luck, keep us posted.

i actually started rolling the shafts around to see if they are still true last night . Ill take a straight edge to them today.

the pressure plate was inspected and all looked in order. The disc was swapped . but the clutch noise would vary on engine rpm rather then vehicle speed.

The mounts are all in order.

the other funny part of this is as jerry (94awdcoupe) mentioned last night and i agree 125% its a mechanical noise . It should leave a mechanical mark. all internal components of the drivetrain are spotless.

buy a new evo! haha

rear diff... maybe the rear diff vibration is being transmitted back through the driveshaft and is causing noise from the T/C area.

Stiffer mounts on the diff/driveline/engine should make the vibration worse if my assumption is correct.

Besides..the diff is the last thing in the driveline!

I think R/TErnie has a good point about the rear diff causing the sound.

My car makes a less audible similar noise around 50+ mph when decel and very light throttle.

I've changed the clutch and changed out the transmission completely. I was pretty sure it was the t-case now but a couple of my friends are saying it also sounds like its coming from the rear and others say no.

You've changed out everything except the transmission. I have changed out the transmission so its safe to assume maybe it is the rear diff transferring the sound to the front.

Are you able to have access to try out another rear diff? I would change mine but lack of funds and also the sound being very faint keep me from changing it out right now.
