Overrevving when accelerating

Evo IX with about 44k miles.

Whenever I accelerate in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear, my engine will jump from 3500rpms to about 4000rpms for a second or two and will then back down to where it should be. This only happens at WOT. If I ease it up to 4k, nothing will happen when I try to accelerate.

I tried to read up on this and I saw similar problems but with mixed comments on the issue. Is this my clutch slipping? A boost problem? I could really see it being either.

I have a boost gauge and it looks like I hold boost up to ~20psi but I am still planning on putting a boost leak tester together tomorrow to check that as well. Does this even sound consistent with a boost issue or should I just plan on changing the clutch out? I tried the "5th gear low rpm" clutch check and it holds strong.

Any thoughts or advice are greatly appreciated.

I bought the car used with 29k miles on it and the dealer said the clutch hadn't been changed.

I am 100% certain that is the problem. Go get an Excedy Twin.

yeah bro, my cars got 21,000 miles! i still cnt belieeve the clutch is going.. i was in shock when this started happening. but since the day i bought it at 17,000 miles i always thought the clutch was a little slippy. but i never thought much of it cuz from driving a wrx everyone told me that evo clutches like butter compared to the wrx.. but i guess it was a lil F'ed up too.

My car is on it's third clutch and it has 16,000 miles. It seems like nothing can burn up a clutch like an evo. Comp stage 3 holding strong right now.

three clutches in 16k miles sounds like a driver issue not a clutch issue

that's abuse

Sounds like someone drove it like they stole it before or while at the dealership before you bought the vehicle.

Most likely your clutch, start looking into a replacement. It is not uncommon for clutches to last around 30k miles. Mistubishi even knows this. As the clutch grabs you are building boost because load is then being put on the car.

Same thing happened to me - As soon as I hit peak boost the RPMs would fall back, and then try to grab again, it's the clutch.

Actually it was similar, but not the same - I would actually accelerate, but AFTER that the clutch would slip and RPMS would fall

It'll get worse as the clutch gets worn further, and it happens fast

Most definitely...

I had many 4cyl turbo cars... launched the **** out of them... and only my 02wrx needed a new clutch... but it had 100k miles...

3 clutch, 16,000 miles??? take a driving course my friend (i mean that with as little disrespect possible)
