Winter engine oil for built engines

My oil of prference on my built motor is currently the Valvoline vr-1 but I think it's on the thick side in order to drive the car sometimes in the winter.

I am thinking of going to a 10w40 for these 2-3 months but most probably the car will not see more than 1000 miles during that period. I am thinking of using the Castrol GTX 10w40...

Any other suggestions? What do you guys use?

Mitsubishi makes recommendations for the engine they built only. For an after market built engine I'd suggest you need an oil gauge. Watch it like a hawk when at hot idle. If the pressure offers to go near zero at hot idle you are running too little viscosity.

Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil (HDD)

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/hdd.aspx

This is what I am using and my car is running smother then ever!

AMSOIL Series 3000 100% Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil (HDD) delivers extraordinary lubrication in both diesel and gasoline engines found in commercial, fleet and personal vehicles. By combining the industry’s premier synthetic technology with AMSOIL premium additives, AMSOIL Series 3000 exceeds the higher performance demands of modern engines. It withstands the stress of higher heat, higher acid levels and excessive soot-loading found in EGR-equipped engines. AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil consistently outperforms conventional and synthetic diesel oils for long-lasting performance and protection.

And in the summer I will run:

SAE 10W-40 Synthetic Premium Protection Motor Oil (AMO)

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/amo.aspx

AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-40 Motor Oil is specially formulated to provide superior protection and performance in a wide variety of demanding applications. By incorporating high-quality synthetic base stocks and a superior high-zinc additive package, AMSOIL Premium Protection Oil exceeds the needs of large and small gasoline or diesel engines in cars, motorcycles, trucks, motor homes, maintenance equipment, heavy equipment, street rods and especially turbo-charged models. It is ideal for high horse power vehicles, vehicles with flat-tappet cams and high-stress vehicles subject to hot temperatures, heavy hauling, trailer pulling or off-road use. AMSOIL Premium Protection Oil resists oxidation, neutralizes acids, inhibits corrosion, reduces wear and protects against deposits. It provides the extra anti-wear protection required by engines with flat-tappet cams and high-tension valve springs. AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-40 Premium Protection Motor Oil offers flexibility and performance beyond conventional oil for convenience and trouble-free operation.

Pretty much anything Amsoil will be good. A lot run the 0w30 SSO in the winter I read. I'm sure the stuff dambikeracer runs is fine too. I just run regular 10w30 all year round. Good to -54 degrees so it should be good wherever ur at. I'd check with ur engine builder and see what they recommend too.

Mate, i know i sued to run the 0w30 signature myself on the stock motor... My question is very specific thought!

Engine oil during winter time on built blocks! Believe me, if you run the 0w30 on a built block, especially from the beginning of the build you will be burning oil like you are driving a 2 stroke motorcycle!

Excellent suggestions. I will read more on the suggested oils! How many miles do you have on your built block? If i remember correctly you can change to a synthetic after 3000 miles or so...

Brad Penn 20W-50 in the Summer,Spring,Fall
Brad Penn 10W-40 in the winter

Heats up in about 2-3 Min Ready to drive. Im on a built 2.3L. I live around your area so with todays weather it ran normal Oil temp 180F-195F asper Oil Temp guage also same Oil temp with the 20W-50 durring normal opperation. On a side note Kuz I have to change the oil at around 1800-2000 Miles because I burn some Oil. So rather then just Refilling it I just change it out.

Just over 5,000 miles. Chanded to the 10w-40 with the first change because of the time of year. That was at 1500 miles. Now that it is colder, I am running the 5w-30 HDD Amsoil. Change it every 3000-4000 miles. Most likely will go back to the 10w-40 in May or June.

Are on a built block? How's your oil consumption? What pistons are you using?

My motor is build on the loose side so some oil consumption is expected. I just want to know how thin I can go without having to add a quart every week!

I got me 10w40 valvoline premium. Even from the block is much thinner than my 20w50. Motor starts perfectly, no excessive smoke. Drover around 150 miles yesterday before the snow starts, made some highway pulls and the car feels great.

I will definitely examine some of the other suggested options and we ll see...

i run 10w or 15w 40 yeah round but we dont get very cold here in aus, usually motul 300v or redline or mobil delvac. You could try the Delvac 1 5w 40, fantastic oil for our cars and good for the cold weather being a 5w.
