Help with Clutch Adjustment

I just replaced my clutch and am now trying to adjust it. I've searched and read a lot but everyone says that when they replace their clutch it does not fully disengage, so they push the pedal to the floor and can't shift correctly.

I have the opposite problem, I can hear it slipping when I start off, like the clutch is not fully engaged when I'm off the pedal. It disengages almost as soon as I touch the pedal.

Can someone please confirm for me if this means I would want the rod to be longer on the firewall side of the clutch adjustment assembly?
I moved the rod some and now there's like an inch of free play but the pedal sits lower than the brake pedal (used to be about .5" higher.

After doing the whole clutch install I really, really don't want to mess this up and do it all over again.

Thanks.
