The EVO has the same rating as the 350Z and s2K. Its not THAT far off from the Civic! The numbers on the scale translate to a certain quantity of emissions - its defined somewhere by the EPA.

riiiiiight, but at the point where neither your nor i know what that definition is, what you said above is still a bit prematurely conclusory.

Moreover, the 350z and the s2k are poor examples, and together with the EVO provide for an unrepresentative sample of the majority of cars out on the market.

Throw in cars like the ULEV accords and BMW's and the picture is much different.

Ok, here is what their 1-10 scale for air pollution represents rom the EPA'a web site:

Emissions / Air Pollution

Air pollutants cause health problems and smog. The air pollutants coming out of a vehicle's tailpipe are tightly controlled by EPA's emission regulations. Thanks to efforts from both EPA (on the regulation side) and the automotive industry (on the compliance side), today's vehicles are significantly cleaner than in the past. Technology advances such as catalytic converters, exhaust gas recirculation and electronic fuel controls have made tighter pollution control from vehicles possible. However, emission levels will still vary between vehicles, particularly between classes of vehicles, due to differences in emission standards. You can use the 0-10 emissions rating to compare the cleanliness of any vehicle to any other vehicle regardless of class. A higher score is always better. For instance, a truck receiving a score of 8 is designed to be cleaner than any car receiving a score of 7. Emissions performance should be an important environmental consideration when buying a vehicle.

Pounds of Smog-Forming
Pollution Per 15,000 Miles Emission / Air Pollution
Score
0 - 1.0 10

2.8 - 4.1 9

5.3 - 6.3 8

7.9 - 11.8 7

12.3 - 12.9 6

15.1 - 19.8 5

20.8 - 25.0 4

27.4 - 36.3 3

39.0 - 40.6 2

43.7 - 58.8 1

63.8 - 121.1 0

The Greenhouse Gas figures are estimates of the actual amount that would be emitted so that seems pretty self-explanatory.

I understand your point about the S2K and 350Z not be representitive of the majority of cars. Still, I think we should compare this car to ones close to its class. However, here are some more popular cars (in addition to the Civic in the earlier post):
Air Greenhouse

Accord 6-10 6.6 - 8.0
Altima 6-7 7.4 - 8.8
Camry 7 7.1 - 8.3
Explorer 4 11.1-11.4
Blazer 4-6 11.2-11.5
Tahoe 0-3 12.4-12.9

EVO 6 9.0

Its not THAT bad for the EVO, especially if you consider the additional performance.

good info. i have more to say about this, but im in a rush, so ill post on here later. To cut to the chase, the interval measured by each point on the scale is not the same as the other ones, e.g. the range represented by a 5 is not the same as the range represented by a 6

Absolutely agree with that. Still, the ranges get larger as you get to the more polluting ratings.
