Definitely check the timing next.
If that looks good, pull the valve cover and check to make sure the head is in order. I was hunting down a really bad misfire about 3 years ago, and it ended up being a missing rocker arm for the #2 exhaust valve (I got the car used, God help me).
My symptoms were different than yours (it only broke up over 5.5k) but if it isn't the timing, then I'd look in the head next.
Are there any other symptoms that might be clues (even if you think they're unrelated)?

I will look into the timing, but how typical is it to jump while in normal driving conditions? Any clue..

It's not typical. But with the back-firing that you've had, it makes it more suspect.
I'm out of ideas on this one; as long as you've confirmed you've got both spark AND fuel going into the cylinder, then I'd check the timing. After that... take it to a good mechanic I guess?

That's exactly what I did, it turns out that the fuel solenoid that controls all four fuel injectors was out (rare).
He replaced it and the car is running like a dream! What a frustrating experience!!
Thanks for all of your inputs.
