New cams...Evo falls on its face

Ok...I will try to keep it short and sweet. I recently changed from Helix 272s to Kelford 272's along with supertech OEM size valves and dual springs. While doing this I also removed all of the EGR crap based on the write up. I went and took the car for a spin and it runs very smooth except in boost. It is building boost but is not really moving anywhere. I also noticed it is running pretty rich. I know the first thing I will be doing is a boost leak test as it seems like this may make sense even though I felt everything was nice and tight but wanted opinions as to anything else to look for that could possibly cause this.

I understand it needs to be tuned hence the tuning session at AMS on the 26th but I don't think there should be that drastic of a change via the cams. If anything the higher lift I would think would make it lean not rich. When I say it is slow I mean it is REAL slow. Drastically different. It does run very smooth outside of boost though.

Assuming the install was done correctly, the tune will make a world of a difference.

Detonating the engine until you have cracked a piston might require you to reschedule your tuning appointment until 2011.

Lol. Don't go into boost till it gets tuned.

Thanks but again I don't think it should be a drastically different tune from where it is now. When I say it's rich it's about a point off.

The cams are shifting the powerband so your current tune is out of wack. Just stay out of boost until your car is re-tuned.

Wow it's not that I wasn't listening but thanks. Just like to understand reasoning and don't want to drive over 5 hours if there is something else that I should be looking for before I make the hike. I do appreciate the advice I am just the type of person that likes to understand. To me moving to a slightly different cam doesn't seem like it would effect it that drastically.

i also wonder if you developed a boost leak during the EGR removal... maybe you didnt zip tie some of the nipples and it popped off already?

kelfords are more aggresive than your old helix, so yeah there will be a difference there for sure. What makes u think you are running rich??? I would stay off boost for a while because kelfords lately have been know to cause engine knock, so i would watch out for that.

Im not familiar with the Helix 272 cams however I believe they are very similar to the HKS 272s. The kelfords are much more aggressive than the HKS cams hence the need for upgraded valve springs. Having the same duration really doesnt mean the cams are similar. In the case of the kelfords they have much higher lift. Taking that into account you should realize that the tune really needs to be tweaked and your issues will probably go away.

Thanks very much for the replies. I too was thinking it could be something on the EGR removal. I will double check all that and do a boost leak. After that I will stay out of boost until I get to AMS. I am sorry if I came across wrong I just like to understand everything and I just didn't expect that much of a difference. I do appreciate all the input.
