Evo IX engine into and Evo VIII?

Hello all! I知 new to these forums and after a few months of lurking ive decided I知 ready to lose my virginity. Please excuse me if I sound vague or confuse any one with this post.

Feb 13 I finally bought a 2003 Evo VIII. The car appeared to be in great condition with 75k on it. After going through the car and doing basic maintenance items ie. Spark plugs, oil change, tranny oil change, etc. I noticed that the coolant was orange! Figured some a-hole decided to cheap out and run tap water. So I flushed the coolant system two times. Finally after the second time I was still noticing some sediment in the over flow tank. I figured one last time would be enough. Well it was enough, enough to clear out all the head gasket sealant that some a-hole poured into the coolant system to hide the blown head gasket. Took the car over to MZM and had a coolant system pressure test done and a leak down check done to confirm what I already knew. Blown head gasket!

Not to bad.....but it gets worse! After removing the head and checking all the specs on the short block, it was found that the cylinder walls were warped on all four cylinders from top to bottom. Not only do I need head work but now I might as well have the short block rebuilt.

Well im on a budget and cant afford more then 8,000k to get this thing going again. So I figured i could just pick up a new crate or used motor out of a salvage. Unfortunately all i can find are Evo IX motors. Now I know the tranny will bolt up. I know the ECU has to be changed. But is it possible to drop in an Evo IX motor into an Evo VIII without any major fabrication or headaches????? Thanks Again!!!!

You can ask the OP that did a thread on this subject. How much it cost him etc.

In all honesty it shouldn't cost more than 3,000 for a low mileage or refreshed engine. Labor for install would run $500-$800.00 max. I personally recommend staying with a factory 8 motor.

Thanks for the link!

I agree and id rather stay with the stocker but the problem is finding a new or used turn key Evo 8 motor. They just dont seem to be out there.....

Plenty of Evo 9 motors tho.

Its not too bad to do this really. We have done a few conversions but most of it comes down to having ALL the parts. Anything you dont have that you need to buy new makes it more expensive. 500-800 labor is beyond optimistic, expect to pay well more than that.

Save your money, take a little time and build the one you have. With the cost to do a swap, and the risk associated with a junkyard engine(No labor warranty for most) you may very well be out another $3-4 K plus. Might be better to purchase a built/fresh shortblock, have your head redone, and go from there. And cheaper(esp on these cars) is definately NOT the way to go. Sorry for your troubles, best of luck.

if your stuck on using a new motor, you can just run the evo 9 shortblock with the evo8 head (assuming your head is good).

all you need is an adapter for the oil pressure sensor which can be had from ams.

<--- has evo 9 block and evo 8 head

I've got an evo 8 motor with 55k on it. It comes with kelford 272 cams installed.

The link for the wrecked car is in the "south region" for sale section, "part-out". Kevin D from evolution dynamics was parting the car out for us. I was planning on keeping the block for a spare but my buschur has been a champ. I've got the Motor, Tranny, and T-case all for sale. I can get you pics, and you can contact Kevin D directly at Evo D if you'd like.

Complete long-block (valve cover to oil-pan) $3000 shipped

Good luck bro!

Just an update, I purchased an Evo 9 crate motor a few weeks ago. Due to the fact that it comes with a brand new Evo 9 turbo and I got a good deal on it from Lancer Shop I couldnt resist. Plus now I have tons of parts to part out. Got and Evo 9 Ecu and complete wiring harness and a couple of extra goodies. Motor goes in next weekend. This has all been surprisingly easy.
