Well, if the car has been stock all its life its probably safe to assume the engine has never been through too much stress. Reliable 400awhp should be easily done.
If you bought the car with alot of mods already, I would say 80k is alot.

bigger turbos on low boost are easier on the motor than a small one with 22 psi. if you fun a large bb turbo on 18 psi instead of the stock one on 22-25 psi then you will make more power and it won't detonate because boost is lower. the back pressure will also be greatly reduced
I saw this turbo, it may be a good one to go with, some chick on a scion made 627 whp with one at 27 psi and the guy who had it ran low 11's at 129mph.

no one can really tell you the right answer, if you own an evo you know how stout the motor can be, and even on a low milage/new car adding power adders can blow your motor if not done properly. just do your research, get it tuned, and you should be fine.

sort of in the same boat at 85k. My plan is to go through the top end and check out the pistons/cylinders while apart. If they look good, Im running it. If not, some drop ins or if a rebuild if needed. I cant see a problem and then not do anything about it. Upgrade top end before going back together. If nothing else, just a bunch of "might-as-wells" while putting in head bolts.
But I plan to wait until I get my other project reliably on the road before getting into it. Because I know my projects always turn into 4x what I expected.
So I say just give it a real good inspection, go ahead and replace the head gasket and possibly head bolts to have a good reason to get in there and look at things. Or just go with it and hope for the best.
