Head porting

So I'm thinking about having my Head ported, but just gasket match the ports. Will this have any benefits, if so what would they be?

I did try searching but the only posts I found were with valve work and other work done. I'm looking for info on just having the intake and exhaust ports (correct me if this is the wrong termnology) ported out.

Spend your time in the bowls not gasket matching.

How tough is that? Could my local engine shop do that, or would I need a specialist. I was just looking for a quick upgrade while my head was off.

Not that tough... I think if they offer a porting service that has been recommended, chances are that they're able to run a die grinder. Blending the bowls isn't especially hard. Ask them to see examples of their work if possible.

Yeah, the bowls are good to get ported. I think your talking about having the combustion chambers ported.

Doing this should lower your compression and torque a bit as well. I contemplated for a long time getting it done, but unless your going for numbers in excess of 600hp, I don't think it is worth it.

no... bowl work is where the seat of the valve is located to the valve guide... that area.

the combustion chamber...is well, the combustion chamber.

So what benefits would i see from porting the bowl?

Also what benefits are seen from gasket matching the intake and exhaust ports?

Oh and my end goal is only like 400 to 450whp. I know I dont need head work at all to hit that but I figured while its off I might as well, it can only help

IMO the port cross sectional area is plenty large... I wouldn't gasket match it will kill port velocity.

The casting of the head does not agree 100% with how it was machined... you're essentially "lining up" the ports with the valves and removing any casting errors from the factory. A very simple procedure that will make your head more efficient with no ill effects.

interesting, so when you say efficient are we talking power gains, or faster spool?

Just up the casting flash and as stated before a little work in the bowl area will do you just right.
