throttle body mishap
hi all. i have just finished putting on my turboback, licp, and rims, so i decided, what the heck. I'm gonna do some maintenance. so i do all the normal stuff like lof, clean the drop-in, and clean the throttle body. well, all went as planned and i found alot of buildup in the throttle body. well, it wasn't buildup, it was a weird coating or something to take up the space between the throttle plate and the body. so now, i have a clean throttle body, and major idle issues.
so, my question is, has anyone used any thing like a thin layer of rtv or something similar to take up that space? i searched and someone said liquid paper, but, i'm looking for a longer term solution. a new throttle body is $1000 (lol). so no, i won't be getting a throttle body any time soon. any experiences would be helpful. thanks guys!

Where you see new TB's for that much? But to help you out, it could have been some form of sealant. If there is a leak coming from your TB due to cleaning off that sealant that could be your reason. Hope that helps and GL.

i found that price on mitsubishiparts.net. they're price was actually $852. list was $984. you add shipping and tax, and you got $1000 bucks+. i think i'll try x rouges idea, but i am yanking the throttle body today and am going to try it. i'll let you guys know how it turns out.

You are fine removing that coating, its primarily there to keep the throttle plate from sticking. When I removed and ported mine, I removed the coating, and as far as I know, all the ported throttle bodies out there do not replace that coating.
You are OK. Your idle might go up slightly from the air bypassing the plate, but you can adjust that properly using EvoScan (Acuators) and adjusting your BISS screw.
Your fine without that coating.

thanks tikkleman. i just don't wanna start messing with the biss yet. i looked into the boomba and works tb and the boomba looks like a nice piece. after the porting, did you mess with that biss? i don't have a tune or a tactrix so i can't use evoscan yet. but i guess i'm gonna try something. thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Check around some of the MilSpec threads. That material is there to keep air from leaking past the throttle plate. I can imagine you have idle issues because now more air is leaking past.
Unlike what tkklemann said, when you have MilSpec port your throttle body they actually put the moly spray material around the plate so it seals better.

I cleaned mine a while a back and had the same issue with the erratic idle. I flipped the throttle plate upside down and it s was fine then. I knew you would want the same side of the plate to face out but I didn't think it would matter what side goes towards the top....apparently it does.

thanks for the link. thanks all. i just yanked the throttle body and i used some aviation form a gasket from permatex. it resists oil, fuel and is rated to 400 degrees. i put a thin coat on the back of the throttle plate and letting it dry right now. couldn't readily find the moly stuff and the car is a daily. if it works, great. if not, i'll be giving mil.spec or boomba my credit card info soon. lol. and i may try what you did 20gmr.
